Crested Caracara, Saturday Bird Notes, Oct. 31, 2015

Crested Caracara in Franklin Twp.

One of the more interesting mocosocoBirds reports in recent memory came this morning from the Middlebush Road area of Franklin Township. A Crested Caracara was observed at the corner of South Middlebush Road and Suydam before flying westward from that location (Arlene Oley) . The text from the JerseyBirds archive is here.

Several people searched for the bird into the afternoon without relocating it. Crested Caracara is a state review species and all reports should be sent to the New Jersey Bird Records Committee.

Here is a screen shot of a camera’s LCD screen that Arlene sent to mocosocoBirds. She credits the photo to Susan McCoy.

Orange-crowned Warbler at Glenhurst Meadows

An Orange-crowned Warbler was found and photographed today at Glenhurst Meadows (Margaret Barbuty). According to eBird data, this is the only Orange-crowned Warbler reported in New Jersey north of I-78, outside of Bergen and Hudson Counties, in 2015.

Other Field Notes

Melanie Lane Wetlands in Hanover Twp. has suffered enormous encroachment over the years. It is nearly impossible to view from the north side (Melanie Lane) any longer due to a professional soccer team’s fencing in and gating that access. The Signature Fitness location on Rt. 10 West remains the most easily accessible place, albeit with very limited viewing. Nonetheless, this small wetlands area remains one of the premier waterfowl spots in the local area.

This afternoon, 2 Wood Ducks, 30 Gadwall, 3 Am. Wigeon, 2 Am. Black Ducks, 50 Mallards, 3 Blue-winged Teal, 17 Northern Shovelers, 16 Northern Pintail and 32 Green-winged Teal were counted in the pond. This is impressive for a splitoff of the Whippany River bordered by an industrial area, a state highway and a major county road.

The south end of Troy Meadows consists of numerous nooks and crannies worth exploring. One is the kiosk parking area on South Beverwyck Road which gives access to the grassy/scrubby sparrow areas of the gas pipeline and power line. Another area is the various locations along Troy Road, especially the vague path along Smith Ditch, which forms the southern end of Troy Meadows.

Sparrows in this area were numerous this morning with Song, Swamp and White-throateds represented in healthy numbers. 2 Lincoln’s, 1 White-crowned and a Fox Sparrow kept company with the other sparrow species.

There are several reports of at least 4 Red-headed Woodpeckers continuing on Troy Meadows Road throughout the previous week. They are found between the metal bridge and the old trap shoot range (Chris Thomas, Dave Blinder).

Photographer Dave Blinder has a brief video of Autumn Birds of Troy Meadows which can be viewed here. It includes an immature Red-headed Woodpecker as well as Wood Ducks.

Also, from last weekend at the Great Swamp NWR, Dave created a video of an American Kestrel. The YouTube link is here.

Red-headed Woodpeckers (RHWO) continue along the Passaic River at the Morris and Somerset border. They can be in either Lord Stirling Park (Somerset) or the Great Swamp NWR (Morris), take your pick. Jim Mulvey photographed a distant adult during the week. The RHWO was along the Fisherman’s Trail in Lord Stirling Park.

7 Eastern Meadowlarks were reported at Frelinghuysen Fields, Harding Twp., yesterday, Oct. 30 (Alan Bernstein). None were found today.

Look closely at the photo below and you will see the Electric Starlings of East Hanover. This is part of a power station. Chuck Hantis says the entire power grid was covered with E. Starlings.

Weekend Bird Notes – Oct. 25, 2015

Long-tailed Ducks, Boonton Reservoir, NJ, Oct. 25, 2015 (ID photo by Jonathan Klizas)

(Click on the photo for a larger image.)

Three Long-tailed Ducks were at the north end of Boonton Reservoir this morning. The above photo shows the ducks in the foreground and shows the viewer how much the water is drawn down at the reservoir. The bare shore in the background is usually submerged.

A Common Loon, 11 Green-winged Teal and a quartet of Gadwalls along with the usual Ring-billed Gulls, Mute Swans, etc. were at the reservoir.

An immature Great Cormorant was at Lake Parsippany on Oct. 3. What is possibly the same Great Cormorant was seen this morning at the south end of the lake, keeping company with a not-so-great Cormorant (i.e., Double-crested) as seen in the photo below.

Small numbers of Buffleheads, Common Mergansers and Ruddy Ducks are also at the lake.

From Ivan Kossak in Lincoln Park, Oct. 24:
“43 species in Lincoln Park. The indisputable highlight was an Eastern Meadowlark at the Borinski Farm on Route 202 [Editor’s note: Ivan has access to the farm which is private property]. If not for the Meadowlark, a Vesper Sparrow at Beavertown Park on Pine Brook Road would have taken top honors. Also notable were 5 Hermit Thrushes at Beavertown Park and another at Lanes Field on Ryerson Road and several Savannah Sparrows at Borinski Farm. 2 Pied-Billed Grebes were also present at the Lincoln Park Gravel Pits lake.”

9 American Pipits, Purple Finch, Pine Siskin, Rusty Blackbirds along with single White-crowned and Lincoln’s Sparrows and an Eastern Meadowlark were highlights at Glenhurst Meadows, Saturday, Oct. 24 (Jeff Ellerbusch).

Vesper Sparrows are reported this week from typical locations such as Glenhurst Neadows, Finderne Wetlands, Duke Farms, Great Swamp NWR, Troy Meadows, etc.

The following photo of a Vesper Sparrow in the Great Swamp NWR by Chuck Hantis is from Oct. 23.

Birds of October, Oct. 23, 2015

Halloween and the end of Daylight Savings Time are quickly approaching. The first Fox Sparrows of the season in all of New Jersey except for one report from Gloucester County (according to the eBird database) were seen at Negri-Nepote Native Grassland Preserve (Jeff Ellerbusch) and Bamboo Brook (Jonathan Klizas, David Bernstein) on Wednesday Oct. 21.

[Editor’s Note: Bamboo Brook Outdoor Education Center has a mailing address of Far Hills, Somerset Co. but the park actually lies in Morris County and is administered by the Morris County Park Commission. eBird checklists will list the hotspot correctly in Morris.]

Somerset County’s first Say’s Phoebe was last seen and photographed on Monday, Oct. 19 (Donna Schulman). Many thanks to Jacob Socolar for finding and documenting this rarity on Oct. 18.

Celestial Happenings

If you are up and about before dawn tomorrow morning, look to the east and view the planetary trio of Venus (brightest), Jupiter (next-brightest) and Mars. The Three Planets will be visible as a trio until October 29. The next planetary trio appears in January, 2021! Read the EarthSky.org article about this event, here.

A Clay-colored Sparrow was found at Bamboo Brook in Chester Twp., on the morning of Wednesday, Oct. 21 (Bill Lynch). It was near the gate for the deer exclosure but not relocated since.

An immature Red-headed Woodpecker was found at Bamboo Brook today. Alan Boyd’s photo is below.

Say’s Phoebe, Lapland Longspur – Oct. 18, 2015

A Say’s Phoebe was reported from Negri-Nepote Native Grassland Preserve on Sunday, Oct. 18 by Jacob Socolar. This is previously reported on the JerseyBirds listserv as well as eBird. Jacob sent mocosocoBirds the link to his checklist which has a detailed description of the sighting. The link to that checklist is here.

This will be a Somerset County first record of Say’s Phoebe if accepted by the New Jersey Bird Records Committee.

Connecticut Warbler, Big Sit, other reports – Oct. 11, 2015

Lincoln’s Sparrows are wide-spread and Yellow-rumped Warblers are everywhere. A flock of 2,000+ Common Grackles was working Frelinghuysen Fields in Harding Township this morning.  Autumn is burying memories of summer. Temperatures were in the high 30 Fahrenheit degree range in parts of the region this morning with a gentle frost visible on shady low-lying spots in certain areas.

This is only the second record in 2015 of Connecticut Warbler at the usually reliable Glenhurst Meadows location. The other sighting was on a very early date of September 1. The person who found and photographed it on that date? Jason, of course.

The Friends of the Great Swamp held their annual Big Sit today at the overlook on Pleasant Plains Road, Great Swamp NWR. Brave birders started at midnight and continued throughout the day. A complete list will be published in this space when available. Some notable sightings include a flyover Common Loon, Baltimore Oriole and Brant flying with Canada Geese. Thanks to Jeff Ellerbusch for the sightings report.

Lincoln's Sparrow
(Lincoln’s Sparrow, Glenhurst Meadows, NJ, Oct. 10, 2015 – photo by Jeff Ellerbusch)

Yours truly led a New Jersey Audubon All Things Birds field trip at Glenhurst Meadows on Oct. 10. Nine NJAS members and some extra helpers had a beautiful day to explore the meadows. No Connecticut Warblers were found but Lincoln’s and White-crowned Sparrows, Swamp Sparrows in every flavor, Nashville Warblers, 4 Bald Eagles (3 were seen over Wagner’s Farm after some participants left) are a few of the highlights.

Red-headed Woodpeckers continue at Troy Meadows as seen in the photo by Chris Thomas below, Oct. 10, 2015.

Announcing the Great Swamp Big Sit on Sunday, Oct. 11, 2015

From Jim Mulvey, representing the Friends of the Great Swamp:

The Great Swamp’s Big Sit is scheduled for next Sunday, October 11, 2015 at the Overlook. The plan is that we will be setting up the circle/tent/table/chairs on Saturday afternoon and there will be people present at midnight if the weather is cooperative…if not, then at 3 or 4 AM. The north gate will be open for access (the gate over Black Brook) and the south gate will automatically be open at sunrise. Participation at any time and for any length of time by members of our birding community would be fantastic. There will be coffee and snacks for everyone…and people are welcome to bring items themselves if they are so inclined.

Morris County’s quasi-annual quota of Great Cormorant appearances was met today as a juvenile was found on a dock at the north end of Lake Parsippany early this morning. The cormorant disappeared later in the morning but was relocated at the south end at 2 PM, according to an eBird checklist. Along with a report from Hudson County on Oct. 1 and today, these are the first records of Great Cormorant in New Jersey north of I-195 this autumn as per eBird.

Common Loons at Boonton Reservoir

Chris Thomas found 9 Common Loons and a Common Raven at Boonton Reservoir this morning. The loons were visible from the north end in the morning but moved to a cove slightly northwest of the island in the afternoon, effectively out of view.

2 White-crowned Sparrows were found today at Jefferson Road Pond (Chris Thomas).
