State Record Butterfly; Sunday Field Notes; Sep. 14, 2014

Butterflies: Funereal Duskywing – 1st New Jersey Record

On Friday, September 12, 2014 in the Great Swamp NWR, Kurt Hasselman found and photographed the first New Jersey record of Funereal Duskywing (Erynnis funeralis). It was on Goldenrod in the parking area of the White Bridge Wilderness Access area. The butterfly was not relocated today despite searching by many people. This butterfly species, whose range is from the southwestern United States south to Argentina, may be a first regional record as well. A description of the species and a range map at the Butterflies and Moths of North America web site is here. This record is verified by members of the North Jersey chapter of the North American Butterfly Association (NABA).

Caspian Tern in Morris, Sep. 12, 2014

Caspian Tern, Lake Musconetcong, NJ, Sep. 12, 2014 (photo by Jonathan Klizas)

Caspian Tern, Lake Musconetcong, NJ, Sep. 12, 2014 (photo by Jonathan Klizas)

It is a slow week for migrants in Morris and Somerset Counties. Although not the most interesting tern in New Jersey at the current time (a Whiskered Tern is currently in Cape May), the Caspian Tern in the above photograph is the only one reported in Morris County this year. Two are reported from Somerset County in 2014.

The Caspian Tern was seen from Water Street at the gull roost location. Later, it was seen flying in the northeast corner of the lake near the park on Washington Street and later again, back at the gull roost. It will be assumed these sightings are of the same bird unless two are seen at the same time. Other birds at Lake Musconetcong are 2 Pied-billed Grebes, 80 Double-crested Cormorants, Merlin, Ring-billed Gulls and the usual 40+ Mute Swans.
