2 Rough-legged Hawks (RLHA) spent time near the overlook on Pleasant Plains Road, Great Swamp NWR late this morning. A light-morphed individual was viewed by many. Ted Lurker reports a dark-morphed RLHA earlier in the same area, presumably the same individual seen earlier in the week. A few Red-tailed Hawks in the same vicinity thickened the plot as well as a fly-by Bald Eagle.

One of the few positive results of snow is that seed-eating songbirds congregate at whatever snowless ground habitat they can find. Notice the Song and White-throated Sparrows and Dark-eyed Juncos on the edges of roads this week in appropriate places. Yesterday, Steve Fasciana filed an eBird report with 5 Horned Larks in the parking lot near the Mt. Olive Township Dog Park in Turkey Brook Park. This morning, 15 Horned Larks and 20 Dark-eyed Juncos were inside of the fenced-in dog park, that is, until the dogs came. The Horned Larks are probably still in the area. There are many patches of uncovered grass in the park in which to feed. 2 Common Ravens were flying around and croaking in the park, as well.

Where Horned Lark is regular in Somerset County, the species is rarely recorded in Morris County. Somerset County certainly has more suitable Horned Lark habitat, by far, but the west and southwestern sections of Morris have farmland and short-cropped flat sections, which have the right conditions for Horned Lark, Lapland Longspur and Snow Bunting. These areas simply need to be checked more often.

The Franklin Twp. Sandhill Cranes were not seen this afternoon and have not been reported since Jan. 20, the day before the recent snow storm. On Jan. 18, this web site expressed concern about development of the Sandhill Crane wintering area of Randolph-Schoolhouse-Weston Canal Roads. That post is here.

Ted Chase, birder and town council member in Franklin Twp., commented on the status of the area. Ted’s insightful comments are reprinted below. Thank you, Ted.

“To reply to your concern about Crane lots being developed:
The first big lot (from Schoolhouse Rd) along Randolph, which belonged to the Pillar of Fire church, has been under development for sometime – it was essentially approved for development in 2006. This is where the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher was a couple of years ago. The lot north of the House Foods tofu plant belongs to New Jersey American Water; it is not likely that anything will happen to it, their water treatment facilities are far from Randolph Rd. The big field along Randolph Rd still belongs to Pillar of Fire, and so far as I know they have no plans to sell it. Unfortunately, it seems to have been in soybeans this year rather than corn – I think the cranes prefer the corn fields. There is a big field behind which also belongs to Pillar of Fire, and was in corn this year. One has to walk in to get any kind of look at it. NJ American Water has land extending down to Weston Canal Rd. There is another lot between it and the lot along Randolph Rd, which is approved for a warehouse – indeed it has been approved three times, warehouse, data center, warehouse again; not much has been done. Farther south, Pillar of Fire has corn fields both sides of Schoolhouse Rd. They could sell any of these fields, but so far have shown no signs of doing so; another possibility is conversion to soccer fields. I looked for the cranes on Thursday, didn’t see them (though in the field north of Weston Causeway, 106 Canada Geese were accompanied by one Snow).

Bird reports are slow to materialize recently in the snow-covered icebox of Morris and Somerset Counties. The forecast for the next ten days shows the deep freeze continuing with temperatures staying below freezing. If a body of water isn’t completely frozen now, it will be shortly. The larger rivers, such as the Raritan, are still flowing somewhat, but their liquid state may be short-lived.

Nonetheless, the dynamics of vertebrates with feathers tells us that an avian creature can be on the move somewhere regardless of, or responding to, time and weather conditions. A dark-morph Rough-legged Hawk (RLHA) made an appearance on Pleasant Plains Road, Great Swamp NWR this afternoon. The above photo found the RLHA slightly south of the Bluebird Lot heading west. There are reports from Wallkill NWR, the Meadowlands and scattered reports from other sections of New Jersey in 2014. This is the first detailed report of an RLHA for 2014 in the mocosocoBirds region. An eBird report from the Great Swamp on Jan. 19 has no relevant information included at all.  RLHA’s deserve better. It is appreciated that observers state which morph the hawk is, at least, on eBird checklists.

Other than 4+ Red-tailed Hawks, Pleasasnt Plains Road had a few Eastern Bluebirds, American Tree, Song and White-throated Sparrows and Dark-eyed Juncos. Approximately 50 chilled looking Canada Geese were curled up and huddled near the Friends Blind along Long Hill Road .

The 30th annual Southwest Morris Winter Bird Count, founded by Dave Harrison, took place today with chilly temperatures and an increasing wind as the day progressed. The preliminary total with one party yet to report is 76 species (a complete report will be posted when all data is received). Highlights are 15 species of waterfowl, which is impressive considering many bodies of water are frozen. 3 Eagles were tallied, a Northern Saw-whet Owl was heard pre-dawn, the first Gray Catbirds of 2014 in the mocosocoBirds region were observed. A memorable spectacle was viewed when approximately 7,000 Common Grackles roosting in trees in Long Valley, Washington Township, were put up en masse by an immature Red-shouldered Hawk cruising into their midst.

Greater White-fronted Goose in Lyons, Jan. 18, 2014

Greater White-fronted Goose

From Mike Hiotis:
Mid-afternoon today I had the Greater White-fronted Goose close to the driveway at Lyons Veteran’s Hospital on the west side fields. This is the entrance drive off Valley Road. Judging from your photos (see this post) somewhat showing the birds top 3 dark belly bands tapering out to the flanks it may be the same bird seen at the Lord Stirling horse farm?

Sandhill Cranes

Up to 6 Sandhill Cranes continue on Randolph Road, Franklin Township (many observers). It may be a “get these birds while you can” scenario. Development is taking over the area including fields where the Cranes have fed in the past. Lot by lot, Randolph Road’s neighboring fields are falling to the bulldozer.

The continuing Greater White-fronted Goose at the Lord Stirling park equestrian fields on Lord Stirling Road in Bernards Twp. was reported to eBird by John J. Collins.

The 5 Redheads of 290 Davidson Ave. in Franklin Twp. remain in the drainage area of a corporate park (Beth Scott).

The Redhead continues at Amwell Road Pond in Hillsborough Township.

3 of the 6 Sandhill Cranes of Randolph Road, Franklin Township were reported today (Robert Skrabal).

A drake Common Goldeneye, 2 Hooded Mergansers and 2 Bufflehead were in the only open water at Boonton Reservoir late this afternoon. This is the north end where the Rockaway River feeds into the reservoir.

Yesterday at 4:30 p.m. at a frozen Budd Lake, there were 1,600 gulls on the southern end of the lake by the municipal beach. Most eventually flew off towards the south. Today at 3:40 p.m., there was not a single gull on the ice.

Greater White-fronted Goose and other field notes, Jan. 15, 2014

The Greater White-fronted Goose continues at the equestrian fields of Lord Stirling Park (Lord Stirling Road, Bernards Twp.), as late as this afternoon (many observers).

A dark morph Snow Goose (Blue Goose) continues in the Washington Township area of Morris County. It was with 1,000+ Canada Geese off Fairmount Rd. and eventually flew to Beacon Hill Road.

Over 1,600 gulls were at the southern end of Budd Lake at 4:30 this afternoon. A split of 850 Herring, 750 Ring-billed and 5 Great Black-backed Gulls failed to uncover any rarities. At 4:45 all of the gulls became aloft, circling the frozen lake for a while and gradually peeling off towards the south. A smaller group stayed at the lake moving to the northeast portion where the 400 Canada Geese were roosting in the only sliver of open water on the lake.

From eBird:

The 5 Redheads continue at a corporate site at 290 Davidson Avenue in Franklin Twp. (Beth Scott).

The continuing Redhead plus 2 Cackling Geese were at the Amwell Road pond in Hillsborough Twp. (Robert Skrabal).

The 6 Sandhill Cranes of Franklin Twp. were seen at Randolph Road, Franklin Township (Zach Batren).

Yesterday at noon, Richard Schrader found a Greater White-fronted Goose (GWFG) at the VA Hospital grounds in Lyons, Bernards Township. Sound familiar? Today, Mike Hiotis found a GWFG this afternoon at the equestrian field at Lord Stirling Park on Lord Stirling Road, Bernards Township – equally familiar sounding. Is it the same bird as last winter? There has not been time to check yet. The GWFG was still at the field with 450+ Canada Geese at 4:15 in the rain. John J. Collins reported a Cackling Goose yesterday from the same field yesterday, which may still be in the area.

Suddenly, there are Redheads. 5 were seen yesterday at a drainage area on Davidson Avenue in Franklin Township (Beth Scott). They continued there today (Jeff Ellerbusch). Another drake Redhead was found at the Amwell Road Pond (private property) in Hillsborough Township (Frank Sencher, Jr.). Apparently others are in the Hunterdon County reservoirs so this is a species to lookout for in whatever open water there is.

An addendum to today’s earlier post is the exciting report of a Long-tailed Duck at the Bernadsville Quarry, Old Quarry Road, Bernardsville. Found, photographed and eBirded by Robert Stappefenne – this is the 5th known record of Long-tailed Duck in the county. The sighting took place on January 7, 2014, not the 12th as originally reported

Cackling Geese in Morris, Jan. 12, 2014

Cackling Goose with Canada Geese, Florham Park, NJ, Jan. 12, 2014 (digi-phone-scoped by Jamie Glydon)

Cackling Goose with Canada Geese, Florham Park, NJ, Jan. 12, 2014 (digi-phone-scoped by Jamie Glydon)

2 Cackling Geese were seen with approximately 800+ Canada Geese at the southern end of Pinch Brook Golf Course in Florham Park this afternoon. Viewing was from a parking lot on Ridgedale Avenue. Most of the geese had flown by 4:45 p.m. heading towards the general vicinity of Black Meadows in Hanover Township (Jamie Glydon). While essentially widespread in Somerset County, Cackling Goose is a difficult species to find in Morris and these are the first reported in 2014.

A blue-morph Snow Goose was with 450 Canada Geese in a pond on Beacon Hill Road, Middle Valley, Washington Township (Dave Harrison). Dave also found 2014’s first Red-breasted Nuthatch in the mocosocoBirds area at Kenvil Pond, Roxbury Township. This species is absent from its typical locations in Morris county this year.

20 Snow Buntings were flyovers in Gillette, Long Hill Township, vocalizing and showing “flashes of white and light brown” (Jim Mulvey).

The 6 Sandhill Cranes of Franklin Township were seen on Randolph Road today (Kristi Reed).

From Leslie Webster:
“News from Loantaka Brook Reservation: the paths are mostly ice-free as of this morning. Small groups of the usual winter birds were foraging in the woods and a Hermit Thrush was on the forest floor near the path at the edge of the Loantaka Way field. At Kitchell Pond, the upper half of which is ice free, there were three Hooded Mergansers (two males) and a Ruddy Duck, in addition to six Green-winged Teal and four Mallards. Three Herring Gulls have joined sixteen Ring-billed Gulls on the ice and water.”
