Thursday Field Notes and Life After iGoogle, Oct. 31, 2013

From Dorie Cappiello:
“Lake Hopatcong is having it’s 5 year drawdown this year, so the north end has acres of mudflats. It is the lowest I have seen in over 15 years. So, plenty of waterfowl are on the small amount of water in the North end (north of the Brady Bridge). Lots of L. Scaup, A. Widgeon, Gadwall and the usual suspects, but yesterday, a flock of 9 Pectoral Sandpipers were working the mudflats. This change in the ecosystem may provide some interesting birding this Fall and Winter on Lake Hopatcong where the only regular shorebirds we get are Killdeer, Solitary Sandpiper, Spotted Sandpiper and the occasional Yellowleg sp.”

[Editor’s note: Dorie also reported two possible Red-necked Grebes at the lake yesterday, Oct. 30, but not seen today.]

Other reports from the field.

Alan Boyd eBirded the following from Lake Musconetcong (which is also partially drawn down): 150 Mute Swans, 20 Gadwall, 3 Am. Wigeon, 2 Am. Black Ducks, 50 Pied-billed Grebe, 10 Am. Coot and the usual species occurring at the lake. Budd Lake had 5 Bufflehead, 1 Ruddy Duck, 4 Double-crested Cormorants and not much else.

The Pectoral Sandpiper of Melanie Lane Wetlands was eBirded again today (Julie Buechner). Joining it were 5 Wilson’s Snipe and the same collection of waterfowl that have been at the pond recently, i.e. No. Shoveler, No. Pintail, Green-winged Teal, Am. Coot and a Great Egret.

7 sparrow species were seen at Whippany’s Veteran’s Memorial Park this afternoon including 1 Vesper, 12 Savannah, and 2 White-crowned Sparrows (Jamie Glydon).

From Leslie Webster:
Appropriately for Halloween, two Great Horned Owls were calling back and forth at 5:30 AM this morning in suburban Madison. At least one has been present during the winter months in Madison for the past three years. Last year one was heard before Hurricane Sandy and not after. It’s good to have them back.

Life After iGoogle

iGoogle is defunct as of November 1, 2013. This is only meaningful to birders, myself included, who used the personal iGoogle web page as a host for various eBird related gadgets. Google announced a year ago that iGoogle’s demise would occur, so, I prepared for it by creating a freebee web site, NJBirds.weebly.com, using Zachary DeBruine’s brilliant BirdTrax app. The BirdTrax app has three different views in its current manifestation: Sightings, Rarities and Checklists. Rarities is the default, mainly because it loads quickly, but you can view the data by either of the other two selections simply by clicking on their labels. I find Checklists to be the most useful. You can view every checklist entered in eBird for a location during the past week. Clicking around in the BirdTrax app will display the data in different ways.

Next to the BirdTrax app is a button labeled NJ Rarities @ eBird, which takes you to the eBird rarities page for that location. This lists the same sightings that appeared on the eBird iGoogle gadget but in a text format with more hyperlinks including the reporter’s checklist and photos, if any. Besides the state listing on the main page of NJBirds.weebly.com, there is a Counties menu which has a similar layout for each of New Jersey’s 21 counties. The web site is public but the author is liable to change anything, including links, at a whim so be prepared. As stated earlier, I constructed this for personal use but anyone may utilize it…at your own risk. I simply do not have time to support another web site. (mocosocoBirds is unable to use BirdTrax on its web site due to WordPress.com, the host provider, blocking the use of javascript). Links for the rarities alerts and the Morris and Somerset county BirdTrax apps can be found on the upper right (top of the sidebar) of mocosocoBirds main page. Look for the headings eBird Rare Bird Alerts and eBird Checklists.

9 Vesper Sparrows were at Duke Farms today in the community garden area (Jeff Ellerbusch). Can anyone remember a bounty of Vespers as we have had this October? 80 American Pipits were in a single flock behind the community garden. Otherwise, the usual Field, Savannah, Song, White-throated and 4 White-crowned Sparrows were present. Below is a not uncommon sight recently: multiple Vesper Sparrows in the same tree.

Monday Field Notes, Oct. 28, 2013

Washington Valley in Morris Township had 15 Rusty Blackbirds and a Fox Sparrow along Patriots Path on Whitehead Road this afternoon.

From Ken Hart:
3 Dark-eyed Juncos, Eastern Phoebe, and a Hermit Thrush were seen this morning near my home on Black River Rd. in Long Valley.

From Jennifer Books:
The Dark-eyed Juncos are back in Basking Ridge. I saw my first one at the feeder this morning.

From Leslie Webster:
News from Loantaka Brook Reservation: this morning some Yellow-rumped Warblers were noted, though not in the numbers observed over the past week. A Golden-crowned Kinglet, 1 Eastern Towhee, 1 Chipping Sparrow and 2 Hermit Thrushes made the morning interesting. A flock of about 400 Common Grackles were foraging on the forest floor. Only 3 Killdeer represented the shore birds at Kitchell Pond.

At Troy Meadows on Sunday, Oct. 27, Karen English and Terry Carruthers eBirded Red-headed Woodpecker, 3 Common Ravens, 4 Hermit Thrushes, 3 Vesper Sparrows, a Fox Sparrow and 2 Rusty Blackbirds among other species.

17 Vesper Sparrows at Duke Farm; Ducks at Mt. Hope Lake, Oct. 27, 2013

17 Vesper Sparrows at Duke Farm

After finding 14 Vesper Sparrows at Finderne Wetlands yesterday, Oct. 26, Jeff Ellerbusch outdid that by finding 17 Vespers at Duke Farms today. Most were in the general vicinity of the community garden. According to the eBird database and as far as is known otherwise, this is the most seen in New Jersey at one place during one day. 8 Eastern Meadowlarks and 6 White-crowned Sparrows were among the 51 species Jeff tallied.

900 Ruddy Ducks at Mt. Hope Lake

Other than Melanie Lane Wetlands, Mt. Hope Lake is the only body of water in the mocosocoBirds region with any appreciable number of waterfowl or any waterfowl at all. 900 Ruddy Ducks, a Morris county record, are spread out over the entire lake. One week ago, 175 were counted. 650 at the same location on Nov. 24, 2013 was the previous high count. The Ruddys were counted multiple times mainly because of my disbelief in there being so many. Here is today’s list:
33 Mute Swan
1 Wood Duck
34 Gadwall
3 American Wigeon
13 Mallard
8 Northern Shoveler
12 Green-winged Teal
15 Ring-necked Duck
900 Ruddy Duck
2 Pied-billed Grebe
19 Double-crested Cormorant
21 American Coot
24 Ring-billed Gull
1 Belted Kingfisher
The Trumpeter Swan of probable captive origin and likely an escapee from the Bernardsville group, is still at the lake keeping to his/her self. It has been there since spring.

Other Field Notes

Melanie Lane Wetlands also has waterfowl in more modest numbers and some shorebirds as well. 46 Gadwall, 16 Green-winged Teal, Great Egret, 1 American Coot, 8 Killdeer, 2 Greater Yellowlegs, 1 Lesser Yellowlegs and 2 Rusty Blackbirds.

A Vesper Sparrow continues at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Whippany. Another is at Florham Park Fields where there were also 6 American Pipits (Jamie Glydon). 3 were seen at Troy Meadows (Tom Smith).

A Purple Finch was at a feeder in Randolph (Linda Matula).
