Vesper Sparrows, Red-headed Woodpeckers, Oct. 26, 2013

Vesper Sparrow

14 Vesper Sparrows at Finderne Wetlands, 6 at Troy Meadows, 2 at the Tourne, 2 at Duke Farms, 1 in Whippany and another in Chatham Twp. This is a convincing pattern. Vespers are on the move. Here is a bar graph based on eBird data for the combined counties of Morris and Somerset which illustrates that they are right on time.

11 Red-headed Woodpeckers (a 6 to 5, adult to juvenile split) were viewed this morning at Troy Meadows. At least 10 were in the snag forest on the northern edge of Troy Meadows where the predominantly Pin Oak woodland meets the marsh. This extends from the gas line east towards the old trap shoot area. Walking this area north of Troy Brook is not recommended unless one likes trail-less obstacle courses through overgrown vegetation and fallen trees. Probably the only reason one can walk here at all is that the climate has been dry recently. Normally this is a wet swamp. Another Red-headed Woodpecker flew over Patriots Path by South Beverwyck Road. 1,200+ Red-winged Blackbirds and at least 30 Rusty Blackbirds were in the Troy Meadows Rd. area mostly in the snag forest.

6 Vesper Sparrows were seen at Troy Meadows. 5 were in one tree by the trap shooting area. The photo below shows 3 of them. Shortly thereafter they were joined by two others in a different tree. Another Vesper Sparrow was seen next to the aforementioned Patriots Path near South Beverwyck Rd. Sparrows are currently abundant at Troy Meadows.  Any large number is an acceptable estimate for the number of Song, Savannah, Swamp and White-throated Sparrows. Field Sparrows are also plentiful. Two White-crowned Sparrows, an adult and a juvenile, were in the brush near Patriots Path.

14 Vesper Sparrows were at Finderne this morning. 14! 15 is the highest count ever eBirded in New Jersey (Mike O’Brien, The Beanery, Cape May, 2010). They were carefully observed without any double-counting occurring. Other species at Finderne were 8 Gadwall, 4 Green-winged Teal, Great Egret, Wilson’s Snipe, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, 3 American Kestrel, 1 Merlin, 1 Blue-headed Vireo, 12 Tree Swallows, 7 American Pipits and other typical species of the area at this time of year (Jeff Ellerbusch).

Vesper Sparrows were also reported from Veteran’s Memorial Park in Whippany (Jamie Glydon) and the Tanglewood Lane Recycling Pond in Chatham Twp. (Simon Lane). Another 2 were eBirded from Duke Farms (John Beetham).

Dark-eyed Junco near (but not at) the feeder at 7:30 this morning. Black River Rd, Long Valley. Also seen this morning (Black River Rd., Long Valley): Blue-headed Vireo; both Kinglets.
This afternoon at the Robert J. Stahl Natural Area in Bedminster: 2 American Kestrels, Palm Warbler, Yellow-Rumped Warbler, 2 Killdeer (at south pond), 1 Wilson’s Snipe (at north pond; may be the same one I saw at south pond a week ago), Ruby-crowned KInglets, Savannah Sparrows, Song Sparrows, and over 20 Turkey Vultures, moving SW into the strong wind.

Vesper Sparrows, Red-headed Woodpeckers, Golden Eagle, Oct. 25, 2013

2 Vesper Sparrows turned up at Veteran’s Memorial Park, Whippany this morning for the first time this year (Jamie Glydon). This is ten days later than last year at the same location.

Jamie found another Vesper Sparrow at Troy Meadows in the area near the old trap shoot debris. 1 Red-headed Woodpecker was also observed.

A juvenile Red-headed Woodpecker was found in Florham Park as described by Mike Ostrow: “Looks like at least one of the Red-headed Woodpeckers escaped from Troy Meadows. Saw a juve in a tree right next to the Passaic River south of Columbia Tpk.”

A juvenile Golden Eagle flew over the Chimney Rock Hawk Watch late this afternoon (many obs.). This is the second Golden Eagle of the week at The Rock. A Red-headed Woodpecker was seen at the parking lot as well as the first Fox Sparrow reported in the mocosocoBirds region this season (Chris Aquila).

Thursday Field Notes, Oct. 24, 2013

This morning, Duke Farms had Vesper Sparrow, 18 Rusty Blackbirds in a single flock, 7 American Pipits, 2 Eastern Meadowlarks, 12 White-crowned Sparrows and other species typical of the area (Jeff Ellerbusch).
===================================
From Julie Buechner:
A Northern Shoveler, Greater Yellowlegs, and 3 Pectoral Sandpipers were added to the mix at Melanie Lane Wetlands today. [Editor’s note: Julie also reports 5 Killdeer, Lesser Yellowlegs, No. Pintail, Green-winged Teal, Great Egret, etc.]
===================================
Two Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, a Merlin, White-throated, Song and Swamp Sparrows, 7 Wild Turkey and others were at Troy Meadows on the section of Patriots Path that begins south of Troy Road near the Whippany River and loops back to Troy Road near Smith’s Ditch. A new map of birding locations at Troy Meadows is here. Remember that the north and eastern sections of Troy Meadows are currently a construction zone for the Susquehanna-Roseland power line project (J. Klizas)

Cackling Geese, Vesper Sparrow, Birds, Oct. 23, 2013

The season’s first two Cackling Geese of the mocosocoBirds region were reported this morning from Amwell Pond in Hillsborough Township. The pond is at the corner of Auten and Amwell Roads.
===========================================================
Diversity of species may be diminishing but individual numbers of some species are rising. While a Vesper Sparrow was a highlight of the late afternoon at Patriots Path off of South Beverwyck Road in Troy Meadows, it was the sheer numbers of some species that was an attention-getter. As sunset passed, a conservative 3,000 Common Grackles came to roost in the marsh. 500+ American Robins passed overhead. Smaller numbers of Red-winged Blackbirds flew by while an underestimated number of 1,000++ European Starlings roosted, single file, on the many high-tension towers. Klinger Road in the eastern section of Troy Meadows had well over 100 White-throated Sparrows in a small section of vegetation and woods. 200 Brown-headed Cowbirds foraged on a corporate lawn on Troy Road.

Vesper Sparrow, Troy Meadows, NJ, Oct. 23, 2013 (digiscoped by Jonathan Klizas)

Vesper Sparrow, Troy Meadows, NJ, Oct. 23, 2013 (digiscoped by Jonathan Klizas)

NOTE: the eastern area of Troy Meadows is currently overrun with workers and vehicles involved with the Susquehanna-Roseland Project. New high-tension poles are being erected. The capped-off and fenced-in area area of Sharky’s dump on Ridgedale Avenue and the old Hanover airport grounds (an excellent birding area) are currently used as staging areas for the construction. Helicopters are a daily sight over the marsh. It is not known how the resident Bald Eagles are taking all of this as the power line work area is literally next to their nest site.

Other Field Notes

From Julie Buechner:
An American Coot showed up today at Melanie Lane Wetlands. Lots of ducks too including Pintails, Green-winged Teal, Wood Ducks, and Gadwalls. A Great Egret is still there as well as 5 Killdeer and a Lesser Yellowlegs.

From Ken Hart, Oct. 22:
Had a Blue-headed Vireo in the woods behind my house on Black River Rd. in Long Valley this afternoon (Oct. 22), mixed in with a flock of both Kinglet species.
