Sunday Field Notes, Sep. 22, 2013

First Day of Autumn

There are now 3 Red-headed Woodpeckers at Troy Meadows: 2 adults and 1 juvenile. Take Troy Meadows road to the end of the gravel and beginning of the dirt portion of the road, turn left (north) at the remains of the skeet shooting range (look for lots of dark skeet debris), and continue towards Troy Brook. At the brook, there are snags to the north and snags to the west (Troy Brook makes a right angle at this point). The Red-headed Woodpeckers were in the western section of the snags along with Red-bellied and Downy Woodpeckers, a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers and a Northern Flicker. 2 Lincoln’s Sparrows were across the brook (Jamie Glydon, J. Klizas).

A Red-headed Woodpecker and White-eyed Vireo were at Chimney Rock this morning (Simon Lane).

3 Red-headed Woodpeckers at Glenhurst Meadows today were listed on eBird (A. Mart, R. Smith).

1 juvenile Yellow-crowned Night-Heron and 1 juvenile Black-crowned Night-Heron continue to be viewed at the Jefferson Road pond. For now, it is assumed the second Yellow-crowned Night-Heron is in the area and hidden.

An update to the Great Cormorant (GRCO) of Jefferson Road Pond: Terry Carruthers and Karen English saw it Thursday, Sep. 19 which extends the days it was reported (previously, the last known report was from Sep. 17). A second GRCO may have been in the area but could not be confirmed.

5 American Kestrels were at Florham Park Fields on Saturday, Sep. 21 (Chuck Hantis). At least 3 were still present today.

Red-headed Woodpeckers, Sep. 21, 2013

September 2012 saw 7 reports of Red-headed Woodpeckers in New Jersey north of Cape May according to the eBird database. That is how scarce they were for most of the year.

September 2013 sees a different story developing. Hardly a day goes by without a report of a new or existing location for Red-headed Woodpecker in North Jersey from Long Hill Township to Glenhurst Meadows to Bergen County to Walkill NWR to Middlesex County to Sandy Hook.

Today, add Troy Meadows to that list. 2 Red-headed Woodpeckers were near the old trap shooting range at the end of Troy Meadows Road (Jamie Glydon).  Troy Meadows is a magnet for this species when they are increasing their appearances in the mocosocoBirds area. A Merlin was in a nearby snag.

Elsewhere:

A Lincoln’s Sparrow was at Duke Farms, Hillsborough Twp. (Jeff Ellerbusch).

2 Red-headed Woodpeckers, Spotted and Solitary Sandpipers were among the birds eBirded from Glenhurst Meadows by Jim Schlick.

An NJ Audubon trip to Glenhurst added Veery, Blue-headed Vireo and Lincoln’s Sparrow (Carol Hughes on eBird).
