Friday Field Notes, Sep. 20, 2013

A Connecticut Warbler was found late today near the south end of the Meyersville Road Wilderness Trail, Great Swamp NWR (Simon Lane).

1 Killdeer, 1 Spotted Sandpiper, 1 Lesser Yellowlegs, 4 Least Sandpipers and 5 Semipalmated Sandpipers were at the D&R Towpath – Weston Canal Area of Somerset County today (Jeff Ellerbusch).

From Robert Skrabal:
Two Yellow-billed Cuckoos were at Duke Farms today, as well as a Gray-cheeked Thrush, which was inside the Research Woods.

A Connecticut Warbler at the Whitehead Road section of Patriots Path in Washington Valley, Morris Twp. was seen again this morning. A Gray-cheeked Thrush was also reported (David Bernstein). Neither was relocated in the afternoon whereas a Wilson’s Warbler, American Redstarts, Magnolia Warblers and a Rose-breasted Grosbeak continued in the area (Jamie Glydon, J. Klizas).

The 2 juvenile Yellow-crowned Night-Herons and 1 juvenile Black-crowned Night-Heron continue at Jefferson Road in Parsippany (Julie Buechner).

Connecticut Warbler in Morris Co., Sep. 19, 2013

A 1st year Connecticut Warbler was found this afternoon along Patriots Path, Whitehead Road, Morris Township. A Magnolia Warbler and American Redstart were in the area as well. This is the same location where a White-eyed Vireo spent the past few springs and summers.

A note to birders familiar with nearby Sayre’s Farm on Mendham Road: the gate on the driveway is locked. There are other ways to access this place via Patriots Path but these alternate routes require a fair amount of walking.

Both juvenile Yellow-crowned Night-Herons continue at the Jefferson Road Pond, Parsippany (Julie Buechner). It is more than likely that the Great Cormorant has left the area. It was last reported on Tuesday, September 17 after being first reported on the 14th.

Savannah Sparrows are appearing in the mocosocoBirds region with individuals at Glenhurst Meadows and Florham Park Fields both yesterday and today representing the first of the season.

Correction to Glenhurst Meadows post, Sep. 18, 2013

Correction to this post.

Chimney Rock, not Glenhurst Meadows, was the location for Jeff Ellerbusch’s report including the Philadelphia Vireo. This will be corrected on the web site.

Mike Hiotis’ report is correct.

My apologies – Jonathan

Glenhurst Meadows: Philadelphia Vireo, Connecticut Warbler, Sep. 18, 2013

The original post is incorrect. The Philadelphia Vireo segment occurred at Chimney Rock, not Glenhurst Meadows, and is corrected below.

This morning, Chimney Rock in Martinsville had Philadelphia Vireo, 15 Red-eyed Vireos, Winter Wren, Red-headed Woodpecker, 11 warbler species including 25 Black-and-white Warblers, 12 American Redstarts and 10 Northern Parulas (Jeff Ellerbusch).

Mike Hiotis, from Glenhurst Meadows:
This morning close to the lot were Black-throated Green(4),Black-throated Blue, Magnolia, Chestnut-sided, American Redstart & Common Yellowthroat…a Lincoln’s Sparrow a bit further down the center trail. Walking along the stream north from the 4-way trail crossing I found a cooperative Ovenbird I pished to & led to the popping up of a brown-hooded Connecticut Warbler. An adult Red-headed Woodpecker was behind (northwest) the large pond. I heard at least two more calling along the Passaic River on the Morris County side. A bit of bushwhacking on the west side brought up a Wilson’s Snipe…nice walk…

Martinsville NJ
====================================
There are no reports of the Great Cormorant in Parsippany from today. One of the Yellow-crowned Night-Herons (YCNH) was visible (Julie Buechner). Construction and maintenance crews around the pond made viewing difficult. The other YCNH is probably there.
