Anyone who was birding today in the mocosocoBirds region is aware that southbound migrants were dumped on the area as of this morning. Birds were everywhere. Yet, the main story of the day continues to be an innocuous pond in a corporate setting in Parsippany, hereafter known as  Jefferson Road Pond, or better yet, Julie’s Pond. On Monday, September 9, Julie Buechner found a juvenile Yellow-crowned Night-Heron (YCNH) at the pond. It was seen again on September 10. On September 11, the YCNH continued and Julie found an immature Black-crowned Night-Heron (BCNH). A second juvenile YCNH joined the first on September 12 and the BCNH continued. Both YCNHs continue through today.

What would show up next? Julie answered that question today as she found a juvenile Great Cormorant, rare for Morris County. It was at the north end of the pond and remained there at least until 3 p.m. This is only the second Great Cormorant sighting of the season in all of New Jersey and one of very few south of Maine according to the eBird database. Dare I ask again, what will show up next?

Migrants

Sasso Tract in Rockaway Twp. had multiples of most species including Ovenbird, American Redstart, Northern Parula, Magnolia, Blackburnian, Chestnut-sided, Blackpoll, Black-throated Green and Canada Wablers, Swainson’s Thrush and Wood Thrush.

It was not difficult to find warblers today. Even while viewing the Great Cormorant in Parsippany, American Redstart, Black-and-white, Chestnut-sided and Canada Warblers were naked-eye observations directly over my head.

Friday Field Notes, Sep. 13, 2013

If you are near a device connected to the Internet right now, check this out: tempest.aos.wisc.edu/radar/uscompjs.html.

The screen displays a radar image of migration as it is happening and as of 8:15 this evening the east coast was lit up in blue. This is another way of saying that Saturday morning may be spectacular. Broad-winged Hawks will be moving this weekend, as well.
=================================

This is why you may miss the Yellow-crowned Night-Herons in Parsippany (click on the photo for a larger image).

Two juvenile Yellow-crowned Night-Herons continue at the pond at Jefferson Road in Parsipanny (Julie Buechner, J. Klizas). The Night-Herons roosted in some low-lying branches on the east side of the pond. As the picture above shows, they can be almost impossible to see if they are not out in the open and easily disappear in the thick vegetation surrounding the pond.
=================================
Shorebirds were modest at Selody Sod Farm this morning. An unexpected highlight was a Connecticut Warbler seen and photographed Jeff Ellerbusch.

Steve Byland reported a Western Kingbird from his yard at 3:30 this afternoon and stated it was headed towards the Chimney Rock Hawkwatch. I did not read this until 5:40 at which time I texted some hawk watchers at Chimney Rock. Simon Lane answered: “That’s very funny – because at around 3:40 I told Jeff (Ellerbusch) and Chris (Aquila) that I had a large robin-sized bird with yellow underparts fly over the Rock.” No one at Chimney Rock knew of Steve’s observation. When I wrote Steve of the Incident at Chimney Rock, he said Simon’s description of the bird in flight was identical to his. Steve also saw it perched long enough to eliminate other possible species. Quite an interesting occurrence although seen only very briefly at Chimney Rock and not enough to confirm the identification.

From Leslie Webster:
News from Loantaka Brook Reservation: it was a quiet morning, with no warblers observed. However, an Eastern Wood-Pewee was singing its “Twilight Song”–at 8:15 AM. At Kitchell Pond, foraging among the Mallards, Canada Geese, and a few Wood Ducks, were 1 Killdeer, 1 Solitary Sandpiper, and 2 Least Sandpipers.

Night-Herons, Baird’s Sandpiper, other field notes, Sep. 12, 2013

And then there were two

You may paraphrase a quote attributed to Frederic Chopin: “Nothing is more beautiful than a guitar, save perhaps two”, or come up with numerous spin-offs of “Doubling your pleasure”, but, in any case, what was one juvenile Yellow-crowned Night-Heron (YCNH) in Parsippany since September 9, became TWO today, September 12. This is unprecedented in Morris County and was witnessed during different times of the day by Glenn and Eileen Mahler, Alan Boyd, and Julie Buechner, who found the first YCNH on September 9. The Parsippany Night-Heron Day Care Center on Jefferson Road is also playing host to the continuing juvenile Black-crowned Night-Heron found yesterday by Julie and seen today, as well. It will be interesting to see how the coming cold front affects the Night-Heron’s stay.

Baird’s Sandpiper in Somerset County

Jeff Ellerbusch found the third known Somerset County record of Baird’s Sandpiper, a juvenile, this afternoon. It is also the second record this month. To quote Jeff, it was at “the Superfund pond/large puddle below the I-287 bridge- viewable from the towpath”. Here is a map.

Other Field Notes

An American Bittern was seen at Glenhurst Meadows today (Jim Mulvey). It was observed between the wetland area and rear eastern pond (smaller pond).

At the Lincoln Park Gravel Pits late this afternoon (J. Klizas): 2 Northern Shovelers, Pied-billed Grebe, 5 Great Blue Herons, Northern Harrier, 20 Killdeer, 1 Solitary Sandpiper, 3 Greater and 1 Lesser Yellowlegs, 1 Pectoral Sandpiper and 1 Wilson’s Snipe.

Two Night-Heron species in Parsippany, Sep. 11, 2013

Juvenile Black-crowned Night-Heron
Juvenile Black-crowned Night-Heron, Parsippany, NJ, Sep. 11, 2013
(photo by Julie Buechner).

The first documented report in 84 years of both Black-crowned and Yellow-crowned Night-Herons appearing in the same place, practically in the same tree, in Morris County occurred today. Julie Buechner found the juvenile Yellow-crowned Night-Heron (YCNH) on September 9. Today, she relocated the YCNH and found a juvenile Black-crowned Night-Heron, as well. Both Night-Herons can be difficult to spot. A few birders missed them yesterday and today.

In the October, 1929 issue of The Auk (Vol. 46, No. 4, October 1929, pp. 537-538.), Lester L. Walsh of Ridgewood, NJ, describes two separate occasions of viewing a Yellow-crowned Night Heron associating with Black-crowned Night-Herons in, what he calls, the Troy Meadows Swamp. One was an adult seen on June 16, 1929; the other, an immature, on August 5, 1929. To quote Mr. Walsh as he comments on immature Night-Heron field identification of his time: “In this connection it is interesting to mention that several authors have commented on the impossibility of satisfactory field identification of immature birds of these two species. It is my experience, however, that either awing or at rest there are sufficient differences to enable one to make reasonably long range identification with certainty.”

[Editor’s note: I did a double-take when seeing the word “awing” in L.L Walsh’s account. Inspiring awe is the contemporary definition. Of course, Walsh used it in the context of “in flight”. Webster’s Revised Unabridged Dictionary of 1913 defines awing as an adverb meaning “On the wing; flying; fluttering.”]

Yellow-crowned Night-Heron continues in Parsippany, Sep. 10, 2013

The juvenile Yellow-crowned Night-Heron found yesterday in Parsippany by Julie Buechner continues today. It is located at a pond on Jefferson Road near the intersection of Smith Road. It favors the southern end of the pond. It has been seen yesterday near the bridge, on the island at dawn this morning, and on the west shore this afternoon. Dave Harrison reports that it flew to the east shore and out of view at around 5:40 p.m. There is parking in the nearby corporate lots and a foot path that seems to encircle the entire pond.
