Today’s stormy weather did not deposit much in the way of migrating birds, although 4 Bonaparte’s Gulls (3 are pictured above) at Boonton Reservoir was a nice find in the foggy afternoon.

A Lesser Black-backed Gull with Herring Gulls was seen flying west from Bridgewater this morning (Jeff Ellerbusch).

Canvasback drakes were seen on Lake Musconetcong before the fog rolled in (Tom Halliwell, Mike Ostrow).

This afternoon, it was hard to tell if gulls or anything else were on the ice at Budd Lake.

Wednesday Bird Notes, Mar. 25, 2015

Redheads, Lk. Hopatcong, NJ, Mar. 25, 2015 (photo by Jonathan Klizas)

Redheads, Lk. Hopatcong, NJ, Mar. 25, 2015 (photo by Jonathan Klizas)

The 5 Redheads, Greater Scaup and 3 American Coot of Bertrand Island remain in the confines of what little open water there is at Lake Hopatcong. They are present since February 28, at least. 8 Common Mergansers and 4 Buffleheads have recently joined the Bertrand Island party.

As to what activity the above Redhead is engaged in is for you, the reader, to interpret.

Lake Musconetcong currently has the most waterfowl of any Morris lake as it thaws little by little: 35 Mute Swans, 58 Ring-necked Ducks, 34 Bufflehead, 4 Common Goldeneye, 20 Hooded Mergansers, 90 Common Mergansers, 8 Mallards, a pair of Canada Geese, 2 American Black Ducks and 2 Killdeer.

The modest diversity of waterfowl at the partly open north end of Boonton Reservoir earlier in the week has vanished as of today. Not even Ring-necked Ducks were present. 60 Common Mergansers and 4 Bufflehead represent the total number of ducks this afternoon.

The Delaware and Raritan Canal Towpath had the following waterfowl today: 16 Ring-necked Ducks, 14 Bufflehead, 25 Common Goldeneye, 29 Common Mergansers and 1 Red-breasted Merganser drake. Swallow season is picking up as 80 Tree Swallows were tallied (Jeff Ellerbusch).

(Click on the photo for a larger image.)

Over 2,000 Snow Geese continue to inhabit a flooded farm field in the Beacon Hill section of Long Valley. A portion of this group is in the photograph above. The geese are present for nearly a week. Approximately 2,000 Snow Geese used this field in 2014 for a few days at the same time period in March. The Snow Geese were gone by March 22 of 2014.

Thousands of Canada Geese are in the many fields of Washington Township leaving only 20 at Beacon Hill this afternoon. 34 Northern Pintail, 2 Green-winged Teal and 8 Killdeer vie for space.

Boonton Reservoir expands its modest amount of open water, inch-by-inch every day. After yesterday’s post, here, some species were added to the day’s list including Canvasback and Common Goldeneye (Julie Buechner). The Canvasback is absent today, but 26 Wood Ducks were in the reservoir this afternoon along with Common Mergansers, Red-breasted Merganser, Common Goldeneye and Ring-necked Ducks. A lone Tree Swallow flew over the quite chilly reservoir.

Sunday Bird Notes, March 22, 2015

Double-crested Cormorants, Boonton Reservoir, NJ, Mar. 22, 2015 (photo by Jonathan Klizas)

Double-crested Cormorants, Boonton Reservoir, NJ, Mar. 22, 2015 (photo by Jonathan Klizas)

(Click on the photo for a larger image.)

They are back – 3 of the 4 Double-crested Cormorants present at Boonton Reservoir this morning in the photo above – soon to be hundreds co-inhabiting the island with Great Blue Herons.

3 American Wigeon join the continuing 14 Ring-necked Ducks, 1 Red-breasted Merganser (down from 5 yesterday) and the growing number of Common Mergansers, 83.

Lake Hopatcong

While there was a sizable gull movement over the Great Swamp NWR this morning, 175 Ring-billeds, 12 Herring and a Great Black-backed (Simon Lane), gulls were practically absent from Lake Hopatcong. Even the many ice fisherman (yes, there is plenty of thick ice to continue this popular activity) didn’t attract the usual Ring-billed Gulls.

The same 5 Redheads, Greater Scaup hen and 3 American Coot continue at Bertrand Island. They were augmented today by a few Ring-necked Ducks, Bufflehead and Common Mergansers. Maybe the lake will thaw by mid-April.

Although the hoped-for Common Redpoll invasion failed to materialize in Morris and Somerset Counties this winter (4 separate feeder accounts in Morris; 2 in Somerset), Pine Siskins continue to devour thistle at feeders throughout the counties. The Siskins in Morris Township in the photo below are present for six weeks with numbers ranging daily from 10-30.

Correction: email subscribers to mocosocoBirds.com – the Osprey from the Great Swamp NWR in yesterday’s post was mislabeled as a Rough-legged Hawk in the original post mailed to subscribers. It is corrected on the web site.

Saturday Bird Notes, Mar. 21, 2015

Bald Eagle, Melanie Lane Wetlands, Hanover Twp., NJ, Mar. 21, 2015 (photo by Jonathan Klizas)

(Click on the photo for a larger image.)

Ducks were in the process of being tallied at Melanie Lane Wetlands  when, suddenly, the Green-winged Teal and Common Mergansers took flight. The above photo captures the young instigator who made several passes over the water before flying south towards Black Meadows.

Melanie Lane Wetlands is thawed because the moving water of the Whippany River borders it on the east side.  The gulls of last week are gone except for a handful of Ring-billed Gulls. Ducks present are: 4 Gadwall, 2 Northern Pintail, 20 Green-winged Teal, 6 Hooded and 20 Common Mergansers, as well as Canada Geese, Mallards and 2 American Black Ducks. A Killdeer, Wilson’s Snipe and Rusty Blackbirds are on the north side of Melanie Lane in the wet areas of the corporate lawns.

Be aware that the professional soccer team, who is the tenant of the property on Melanie Lane, is building another field which is annihilating the mound of dirt affectionately known as Mt. Melanie. This effectively cuts off access to the wetlands from the north. Despite the pressures of development, this little gem of habitat continues to attract birds.

 Other Field Notes

An Osprey was photographed today at the Great Swamp NWR by Nick Jaramillo (see photo below).
light morph Rough-legged Hawk

A Redhead and other waterfowl were found at Hepner Pond in Denville (Tom Gorman via eBird).

Mergansers are currently utilizing any open section of water, especially since most lakes in Morris County remain frozen. Indian Lake in Denville had a Red-breasted Merganser drake along with Common Mergansers and Ring-necked Ducks. This is another section of water that tends to remain open in even the coldest winters.

This morning, 5 Red-breasted Mergansers (3 drakes, 2 hens) were on the open section of water at the north end of Boonton Reservoir along with a Common Goldeneye, a Greater Scaup hen, 2 Ring-necked Ducks and 31 Common Mergansers.

A Greater White-fronted Goose was seen on River Road near the Norz fields in Hillsborough Twp. (Jeff Ellererbusch, Vicki Schwartz). Horned Larks continue to be in the area. Also present were 13 Killdeer, 6 Wilson’s Snipe and an assortment of waterfowl including Wood Duck, American Wigeon, Northern Pintail and Green-winged Teal.

Glenhurst Meadows tallied 9 Wood Duck, 53 Northern Pintail, 12 Green-winged Teal, 10 Ring-necked Ducks along with the typical species of the area (Jeff Ellerbusch).

Snowy Vernal Equinox, Mar. 20, 2015

Happy Vernal Equinox

The irony of the weather today is not lost on anyone from the northeast, especially after experiencing the second winter from hell in successive years. The vernal equinox occurred on March 20, 2015 at 6:45 PM EDST. It is snowing. There are already 3 inches on the ground in Morris Township. The Pine Siskins are busy emptying the thistle socks. 6 Red-winged Blackbird females, unusual visitors to Kemble Mountain, are feeding on the ground. Most lakes in Morris County are frozen with no sign of thawing anytime soon.

Snow Punks, Great Swamp NWR, NJ, Mar. 20, 2015 (photo by Jonathan Klizas)

Snow Punks, Great Swamp NWR, NJ, Mar. 20, 2015 (photo by Jonathan Klizas)

There are birds in the region. Juncos and American Tree Sparrows are plentiful. Pine Siskins continue to visit their favorite feeding stations. The Siskins visiting a feeder in Morris Township are into their sixth week of residence. Song Sparrows neared abundance today in the snow at Great Swamp NWR. Fox Sparrows are slowly becoming apparent. An Osprey is at Duke Island Park for two days. There are ducks in the region but not enough open water to support diversity in species. American Woodcock seem to have arrived. Geese are everywhere.

Here is comparative data from eBird. Remember that 2014 was as harsh a winter anyone in north New Jersey can remember.

  • From March 1 to March 20 in 2014, 115 species of birds were recorded in Morris; 111 in Somerset.
  • From March 1 to March 20 in 2015, 90 species of birds are recorded in Morris; 107 in Somerset.

Another example of what a difference a year makes: Lake Parsippany is an annual staging area for Common Mergansers in March. In 2014, 550 were reported from the lake on March 27. More than likely, Lake Parsippany will be frozen this year on March 27.

(Click on the photo for a larger image.)

The Snow Geese of Long Valley were not at the temporary lake on Beacon Hill this morning. They arrive some time later in the day. By 3:15 PM, approximately 1,300 Snow Geese were at the lake; down from 2,300 yesterday. Local residents say the geese are an annual occurrence at this location. Amazingly only a scant 200 Canada Geese were present, down from 5,000+ the day before. That is because they were out feeding in the many cornfields of Washington Township as would be observed later.

At 4:00 PM, most of the Snow Geese lifted off and headed north, the same behavior as seen yesterday although slightly earlier in the afternoon.

At least 25 adult blue-morph Snow Geese are present. No rarities have been sighted despite diligent searching.

Arrivals

Eastern Phoebes are slow to arrive in the mocosocoBirds region in 2015. A possible report was on March 17 when one was spotted in Bernards Township (Jennifer Books). Two reports came today from Duke Island Park (Marc Chelemer, Jeff Ellerbusch).

And readers, that is it! None in Morris County so far. Is it late for Eastern Phoebes? Their typical arrival dates are between March 10-20. Tomorrow, March 20, is the vernal equinox with snow in the weather forecast. Morris, you may have to wait.

The first Osprey of 2015 in either Somerset or Morris Counties was spotted today at Duke Island Park (Jeff Ellerbusch).

Incidentally, the Greater White-fronted Goose of Duke Island Park is reported by Marc Chelemer this morning. It was not seen later in the afternoon. The original sighting of the goose is posted here.

Two collared Canada Geese were seen and photographed March 17 at Melanie Lane Wetlands. Both collar codes were submitted to www.reportband.gov. The reports on these geese were received yesterday, twenty-four hours after submission.

Y1Y8 (left goose in the photo) – is a female banded on July 17, 2014 at Varennes, Quebec, Canada – hatched in 2013 or earlier.

Y1Y2 (right goose in the photo) – is an older male, banded on July 6, 2006 at Varennes, Quebec, Canada – hatched in 2005 or earlier. Y1Y2 is at least ten years old this year. Congratulations, Y1Y2!

A Mink Tale by Jim Mulvey

Mink, Glenhurst Meadows, NJ, Mar. 18, 2015 (photo by Jim Mulvey)

From Jim Mulvey:
While at Glenhurst yesterday, I saw 2…perhaps 3 different Mink. The photo of the one in the water is in the Passaic River. While walking along the back area, I observed this one mink on the ice far out on the larger pond. It was repeatedly diving into the water and then popping back out to shake dry and roll on the ice.

I took a few pictures and then started up the trail with the hope of a closer shot at a better angle. It turned out that the Passaic River had other ideas as that trail was flooded. Upon my return, the mink was nowhere to be found on the ice, but right at the area where it had been was this dead Hooded Merganser that was not there previously.

The Greater White-fronted Goose found yesterday, was present again today at Duke Island Park. 1,200 Canada Geese were also feeding at the park, both on the front lawn on Old York Rd. with the Greater White-fronted Goose and inside the park.

Jeff Ellerbusch proposes this is one of the same Greater White-fronted Geese that was at Duke Island Park earlier in the winter based on identical belly markings.

Beacon Hill Road in Long Valley (Washington Twp., Morris County) has a farm field which is attractive to waterfowl, especially geese. In 2015, this field is currently a small lake. At 3:00 this afternoon, the lake and surrounding stables and field was inhabited by 2,300+ Snow Geese (conservative count) and 5,000+ Canada Geese (also conservative). A few overwhelmed Northern Pintail, Mallards and a Wood Duck could be seen swimming between the goose mass. A Killdeer’s call was actually heard penetrating the din of goose cacophony.

The photos above and below show a portion of the geese. There were more to the left and right of the picture frame. Hundreds were in the stable area beyond the fencing. It was an impressive sight.

Common Goldeneyes at Osborne Pond

Common Goldeneye is a rare visitor to the Great Swamp NWR. Osborn Pond, a dammed portion of the Passaic River, lies outside of the boundaries of the Great Swamp and forms a border between Morris and Somerset Counties. It is close enough to the refuge to be considered a neighbor, at least.

2 male and 2 female Common Goldeneyes were at Osborne Pond this afternoon (Jim Mulvey and Joe Pescatore via eBird). With the larger lakes in Morris and the surrounding area still frozen, any slightly open body of water may get waterfowl not usually associated with it. 20+ Ring-necked Ducks and 24 Hooded Mergansers are also at the pond.

Migrating Geese and Gulls

Simply put, Canada Geese and Snow Geese by the thousands migrated north today in Somerset County airspace. At one location in Bridgewater, Jeff Ellerbusch counted 3,600 Canada Geese and almost 1,000 Snow Geese in the morning and that was a relatively casual goose watch.

Ring-billed and Herring Gulls are also on the move. Any group of gulls one can find is worth a scan at this time. No telling what other species may be tagging along.

Other Field Notes

A Common Redpoll was at a private feeder in Hillsborough Twp. (Bobby Skrabal).

American Woodcock, Mar. 16, 2015

American Woodcock

Moody Farm, Morris Twp., NJ, Mar. 16, 2015 (iPhone photo by Jonathan Klizas)

The above photo is of the Moody Farm in the historic Washington Valley section of Morris Township. The iPhone photo was taken at 7:15 this evening and slightly lightened in Photoshop. An American Woodcock was calling from the field by this time, soon to be joined by another. A field on nearby Whitehead Rd. had a displaying and calling Woodcock as well.

Earlier in the day, Randy Little informed this writer that 3 Am. Woodcock were observed or heard the previous evening at Great Swamp NWR.

Here are more reports from this evening, gleaned from eBird:
4 at Negri-Nepote Native Grassland Preserve (Donna Schulman); 5 reported later (Chris Williams).
4 at Glenhurst Meadows (Jeff Ellerbusch, Chris Thomas)

At 7:30 this evening, the NorthNJBirds texting service was lit up with Woodcock notifications from northeastern New Jersey.

They have arrived. They are here. Let the peenting and displaying begin and who gives a hoot (or a peent) if many of the fields remain covered with snow.

Birds on the Towpath

Following are highlights of a Delaware and Raritan Canal Towpath trip by Jeff Ellerbusch this afternoon: 4 Wood Ducks, 2 Northern Pintail, 22 Ring-necked Ducks, 23 Bufflehead, 38 Common Goldeneye, 5 Hooded, 7 Common and 2 Red-breasted Mergansers, 1 Double-crested Cormorant, 9 migrating Red-shouldered Hawks, 175 Red-winged Blackbirds and 450 Common Grackles.

Weather Forecast

This afternoon, NJ.com published a sobering item which @mocosocoBirds tweeted.  The content of the tweet doubles as a link to the story: Cold weather in N.J. could linger until April

Ugh.
