One of the best kept secrets in western Morris County is the area along Waterloo Valley Road in Mt. Olive Township. It is a secret that will most likely remain so because it is the worst road to drive a car on in the county if not in all of New Jersey. Maintenance is a word unknown on Waterloo Valley Road. The following picture will give you an idea of one of the smoother sections:

Adjacent to Stephens and Allamuchy State Parks (even some of the park rangers are unsure of where each park begins and ends), Waterloo Valley Road and Tilcon Lake form an excellent birding location in the spring.

Tilcon Lake has a small Bank Swallow colony. Approximately 10 individuals were seen today. The lake was formed in the early 2000s when the Musconectcong River overran its banks into what was then a quarry owned by Tilcon.  Tilcon Lake was born and the state eventually purchased the land when Tilcon left.

Nearby Waterloo Valley Road runs from International Drive down to Waterloo Road in Warren County. American Redstarts are abundant. Cerulean Warblers probably nest here. A slow drive down the road will display a good collection of warblers, vireos and thrushes. Here is a sampling of species seen today: Eastern Wood-Pewee, Willow Flycatcher, Great Crested Flycatcher, Eastern Kingbird, Yellow-throated, Red-eyed and Warbling Vireos, Veery, Swainson’s and Wood Thrushes, lots of Gray Catbirds, Warblers including, Hooded, Cerulean, Magnolia, Chestnut-sided and Canada, Field and Savannah Sparrows, Indigo Bunting and all of the typical species of the area. Common Loon, Yellow-breasted Chat, White-crowned Sparrow and American Pipit have visited within the past year. Common Raven may have nested at the Saxton Falls Sand and Gravel operation in the recent past.

Here is a brief excerpt of the Cerulean Warbler singing this morning:

Tennessee Warbler, Wilson Warbler, Bay-breasted Warbler, Gray-cheeked Thrushes, Lincoln and White-crowned Sparrows were in the Great Swamp NWR this morning (Simon Lane).

Another Tennessee Warbler was heard at Fort Nonsense in Morristown/Morris Township later in the morning. Tennessee Warblers have been reported every day this week (or so it seems) in this section of Morris County (J. Klizas).

2 Glossy Ibis flew past the Overlook on Pleasasnt Plains Road, Great Swamp NWR today – seen and photographed by Chris Thomas. Chris also observed Yellow-billed and Black-billed Cuckoos, 2 Tennessee Warblers.

Olive-sided Flycatcher, Mourning Warbler, May 15, 2014

Today’s sightings have the distinct feeling of moving into the last phase of spring migration with Olive-sided Flycatcher, Mourning Warbler and Gray-cheeked Thrush reports.

An Olive-sided Flycatcher was at Chimney Rock late this afternoon (Jeff Ellerbusch). Other species present were Yellow-billed and Black-billed Cuckoos and 3 Hooded Warblers, two of which were counter-singing, the recording of which can be heard here.

2 Glossy Ibis are at the flooded Melanie Lane Wetlands. Two were reported from here earlier in the season. A Bobolink was also present. Boblinks are relatively more widespread in Morris County than usual this spring with reports from the Great Swamp NWR (Fenske Visitors Center and Woodland Road), Troy Meadows (Dog park on S. Beverwyck Rd.) and Melanie Lane along with previous reports from various fields in Harding Township and elsewhere.

Alder Flycatcher is a new arrival at Glenhurst Meadows. Other observations are 13 flyover Common Loons, 23 Solitary Sandpipers (a contining high number) and 16 warbler species (Jeff Ellerbusch).

The Yellow-throated Warbler of Colonial Park is reported again (John J. Collins). This individual is present since April 14 and continues to be observed from Parking Lot A.

A possible sighting of a Mississippi Kite is reported today from the Great Swamp NWR (Jim Mulvey). It was seen flying over the Fenske Vistors Center and out of sight over the neighboring Basking Ridge Country Club (formerly Pennbrook C.C. for the old timers). There are no sightings reported from later in the day.

Alder and Willow Flycatchers

Attention all Morris and Somerset County birders: Alder Flycatchers will be passing through the region in the next few weeks. Please visit the following web sites listed below and study the various songs, calls and variations of Willow and Alder Flycatcher vocalizations. Willow Flycatcher is straightforward but does have turns of phrase that make it sound convincingly like what most people imagine an Alder should sound like and vice versa. In other words, many of the two species’ calls are similar.

In brief, Alder is reported more than it should be, often in habitat it has no business being in, and probably misidentified due to the observer’s unawareness of the subtleties and similarities of the Willow/Alder repertoire. For the sake of accuracy in the mocosocoBirds area, please consider the Traill’s Flycatcher to be a Willow unless it is 100% (not 99.9% or less) unmistakably an Alder.

Following are links to help make you the Willow/Alder Flycatcher expert you desire to be:

From the Macaulay Library of Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology. Listen to the hundreds of examples in this magnificent archive:

Happy Traill’s!

What a difference a day makes: Sandhill Crane, White-eyed Vireo, Tennessee Warbler, Eastern Wood-Pewee (widely reported), Willow Flycatcher, Yellow-billed and Black-billed Cuckoo. None of these were found on yesterday’s Big Day romp through Morris and Somerset counties by the mocosocoBirds Quartet (see the last paragraph in this post). All were found today throughout both counties.

A Sandhill Crane was heard at the overlook this morning in the area of the the right corner of the overlook (Jim Gilbert).

2 White-eyed Vireos visited the Moody Farm in Morris Township this morning. Also present were Northern Waterthrush, Tennessee Warbler, Magnolia Warblers, Black-throated Blue and Green Warblers, and the typical species of the area (J. Klizas).

Fort Nonsense, which is on Kemble Mountain – an extension of the Watchung ridges, received the first sunlight and lots of warblers this morning including numerous Black-and-white, Bay-breasted, Blackpoll, Black-throated Blue, Yellow-rumped and Black-throated Green Warblers, Northern Parulas and single Nashville and Tennessee Warblers (J. Klizas).

Both Yellow-billed and Black-billed Cuckoos were heard from the bridge at the North Gate of Pleasant Plains Road, Great Swamp NWR. Many Veerys, Swainson’s Thrushes and warblers including Tennessee, Wilson’s and Canada were recorded as well as Lincoln’s and White-crowned Sparrows (Simon Lane).

A migrant Grasshopper Sparrow was found at Glenhurst Meadows this morning. 6 Wilson’s Warblers and 19 Solitary Sandpipers continue the recent trend of high numbers for both of those species at Glenhurst. Also tallied were: Lincoln’s Sparrow, Black-billed Cuckoo and Bobolink (Jeff Ellerbusch).

From Leslie Webster:
“News from Loantaka Brook Reservation: Newly arrived in the reservation are Eastern Wood-Pewees and the Willow Flycatcher at Kitchell Pond. 12 species of warblers are feeding in mixed groups throughout the woods. At least one Louisiana Waterthrush seems to be staying, and I’ve never seen so many Ovenbirds. One, sad to say, dropped dead nearly at my feet. What a beautiful little bird when viewed close up! Four species of Vireo were observed as well.”

Big Day in mocosoco

Yesterday, May 10, the mocosocoBirds Quartet (Jeff Ellerbusch, Roger Johnson, Jonathan Klizas and Simon Lane) conducted a Big Day in Morris and Somerset Counties – for fun. From pre-dawn at the foggy Great Swamp, to the warbler hills of Rockaway and Jefferson Townships to the grasslands of Hillsborough and Franklin Townships to the Watchung ridges and back to the swamp again the total number of species is 141, or something like that, with 121 in Morris and 101 in Somerset (obviously many overlaps). Of the many highlights were 29 warbler species, Bonaparte’s Gulls on Budd Lake, the continuing Yellow-throated Warbler at Parking Lot A in Colonial Park, all of the swallows, Sora, American Bittern, Common Nighthawks, Cape May Warbler, Bay-breasted Warblers, Cerulean Warbler, etc., etc. The missed species are already forgotten.

Warblers everywhere, May 9, 2014

Reports from the region (and beyond) form a consensus that today was an exceptionally good day to go out and look for migrating birds. Despite morning fog and limited visibilty, it is safe to say that most, if not all, of the regularly occurring warblers of the eastern United States were observed somewhere in Morris and Somerset Counties today. Least Flycatchers and Swainson’s Thrushes also made a push and the first Yellow-billed Cuckoos of the season are reported.

A Glossy Ibis was feeding in the ponds along River Road in Millstone this afternoon (Bobby Skrabal).

Yesterday’s Black Tern at Budd Lake is not present today although 6 Bonaparte’s Gulls are at the lake (Alan Boyd).

A Rusty Blackbird was singing at Black River WMA in Chester Township.  “A good day” for Swainson’s Thrushes is also noted (Tom Halliwell).

Glenhurst Meadows: 4 Vireo species, numerous warbler species including 4 Northern Waterthrushes, Nashville Warbler, 9 Magnolia Warblers, 3 Blackpoll Warblers, 4 Canada Warblers, Wilson’s Warblers, etc. (Jeff Ellerbusch). Susan Treesh reports “~20 species of warblers. Highlights were Worm-eating, Cape May, and Canada Warblers. There were also many Least Flycatchers and Blue-headed and Warbling vireos.” David Bernstein reports a Golden-winged Warbler, seen and heard near the foot bridge by the power line. It was not relocated later.

Chimney Rock has ~19 warbler species including Hooded, Cape May, Bay-breasted, Blackpoll and Canada but not the previously reported Cerulean and Kentucky Warblers of yesterday (Jeff Ellerbusch, et al).

Sourland Mountain Preserve claims the first Yellow-billed Cuckoo of the year in the mocosocoBirds region (Vicki Schwartz). Least Flycatchers and many warbler species are also present. The Summer Tanager has not been reported since Tuesday, May 6.

The soaked playing field of McCarter Park (a.k.a. St. Clare’s Fields) in Denville still has shorebirds: 3 Killdeer, 1 Spotted, 2 Solitary and 17 Least Sandpipers, 1 Greater Yellowlegs (J. Klizas).

A Black Tern was found on Budd Lake this afternoon by Simon Lane. It stayed throughout the rest of the day for others to see. This a rare visitor to Morris County with only 5 previous known records which are listed here. 5 basic-plumaged Bonaparte’s Gulls continue which is newsworthy in itself. Varying numbers have been present since April 3. 6 species of swallows are coursing over the lake: Purple Martin, Barn, Tree, N. Rough-winged,  Bank (double-digit amount, Tom Halliwell) and Cliff (S. Lane). 2 Common Loons also continue.

A Cerulean Warbler, assumed to be the same individual as yesterday, was seen and heard near the parking lot of Chimney Rock (Jeff Ellerbusch). A Kentucky Warbler was found later, again probably the same one as was seen yesterday (J. Ellerbusch, Frank Sencher, Jr., Mike Almendinger).

Glenhurst Meadows has American Coot, Pied-billed Grebe, 11 Solitary Sandpipers, Least Flycatcher, Canada Warbler and other warblers, Lincoln Sparrow, etc. this afternoon (J. Ellerbusch). Reports of Cape May, Tennessee and Kentucky Warblers at Glenhurst in the morning are added by Marc Chelemer.

Opie Road has 6 Semipalmated Plovers, 3 Killdeer, 1 Spotted Sandpiper, 19 Solitary Sandpipers and 48 Least sandpipers (Jeff Ellerbusch).

5 Common Loons are at Boonton Reservoir (Simon Lane).

From Jason Denesevich:
Lord Stirling Park today: fisherman’s trail to dance floor.
1 Prothonatary Warbler, 4 Black-throated Blue Warblers, 2 Black-throated Green Warblers, 3 Am. Redstarts, 2 Ovenbirds. 1 Scarlet Tanager, Baltimore and Orchard Orioles, 2 Blue-headed Vireos, 3 Yellow-throated Vireo, 6 Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, 3 Solitary Sandpipers, 1 Spotted Sandpiper, 1 Greater Yellowlegs, and 3 Great Egrets.

Yellow-throated, Kentucky and Cerulean Warblers, Summer Tanager, Common Nighthawk, May 7, 2014

The third Yellow-throated Warbler in Morris County this season was found at Hedden Park, Randolph Township this afternoon by Julie Buechner. Somerset County has also had three reports of Yellow-throated Warblers in 2014. Also at Hedden Park were 2 Solitary and 2 Spotted Sandpipers, Pileated Woodpecker, Blue-headed, Warbling and Red-eyed Vireos, Louisiana Waterthush, Wilson’s Warbler and other warbler species.

A young male Summer Tanager continues at the main parking area on East Mountain Road of Sourland Mountain Preserve in Hillsborough Township (Frank Sencher, Jr.). Also present are numerous Scarlet Tanagers, Least Flycatcher, lots of Ruby-crowned Kinglets and warblers, Orchard and Baltimore Orioles, Indigo Bunting, etc.

From Liz Mershon:
Chimney Rock parking lot was quiet this morning, so I walked the path down to the hawk watch area. A Kentucky Warbler flew from the left side of the path (out of heavy undergrowth) to the right side of the path. Got great looks at the Kentucky Warbler before it flew back across the path into the heavy thickets. It sang once and disappeared into the undergrowth.”

In the afternoon a Cerulean Warbler was seen and heard moving up the ridge at Chimney Rock (Jeff Ellerbusch).

2 Common Loons and 4 basic-plumaged Bonaparte’s Gulls continue at Budd Lake (Alan Boyd).

From Ken Hart:
A nice 5-6 PM hour at the Robert Stahl Natural Area in Bedminster produced the following: Several Baltimore Orioles, a Brown Thrasher, Least Flycatcher, 2 Green Herons (continuing), Common Yellowthroat.

And on the south side of River Road: A flock of over 50 Yellow-rumped Warblers, one Black-and-white Warbler, and a Pileated Woodpecker. Also a Rose-breasted Grosbeak.

Summer Tanager, Lincoln’s Sparrow, Golden-winged Warbler hybrid, May 6, 2014

Somerset County had its second Summer Tanager within a week this morning when Frank Sencher, Jr. heard and saw a young male at Sourland Mountain Preserve in Hillsborough Township. The Tanager was not relocated later. Other warblers present included Magnolia, Prairie, Black-throated Blue, Ovenbird, Black-throated Green. Least Flycatcher was also observed.

Lincoln’s Sparrow and White-crowned Sparrows were between the north gate bridge and the overlook on Pleasant Plains Road, Great Swamp NWR this morning (J. Klizas).

The following hybrid was found in Flanders yesterday at a private location by Michael Bochnik. It doesn’t show in any of the photos but the individual has yellow wing bars. It is not a pure Brewster’s Warbler and not a pure Lawrence’s Warbler but something backcrossed in between. All ideas are welcome. An interesting article from the American Birding Association archives on Golden-winged x Blue-winged offspring  is here. Click on the photos for a larger image.

From Leslie Webster:
“News from Loantaka Brook Reservation: the stretch of path along the gas line from the Loantaka Way parking area, and into the woods to the path crossroads, continues to be very productive for warblers: Ovenbirds, Black-and-whites, Common Yellowthroats, American Redstarts, Northern Parulas, Magnolias, Chestnut-sided, Black-throated Blues, Black-throated Greens, Prairie, and Yellow-rumped were all present and singing this morning. A Pine Warbler continues in the Pines near Kitchell Pond, and the Yellow Warblers are well established at the pond. A dazed looking Vesper Sparrow was on the ground next to the Loantaka Way parking lot. New to the area are Scarlet Tanager (pointed out by another birder), a scattering of Veeries throughout the woods, and a Kingbird at the pond. Two Solitary Sandpipers were dueling in the back pond.”
