A Cackling Goose was in the Raritan River with Canada Geese off of River Road in Hillsborough Twp. today. Further down River Road, a huge number of gulls was in the vicinity of the Norz farm. Included were 450 Ring-billed Gulls, 8 Herring Gulls and 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull (Jeff Ellerbusch).

Yesterday, more Red-headed Woodpeckers were located at the Passaic River County Park in Chatham Township. 3 Red-headed Woodpeckers, 2 Pileated Woodpeckers and 3 Rusty Blackbirds were in the area (Jim Mulvey). This section of the park is entered from River Road near Roosevelt Rd. in Chaham Township. From the Berkeley Heights side (Union County), enter by the soccer fields on Springfield Ave.

Sunday Field Notes, Nov. 17, 2013

The current state of birds in the Morris and Somerset area leans towards red in the color spectrum: A Red-necked Grebe at Lake Hopatcong yesterday, numerous Red-headed Woodpeckers in certain locations and Rusty Blackbirds throughout the region.

The Great Swamp NWR is back in the news after a lengthy period. The Swamp was seemingly shut out from the influx of Red-headed Woodpeckers in the mocosocoBirds region until today when 4 were found along Pleasant Plains Road: 3 calling by the north gate and 1 opposite the Fenske Vistors center. Even more impressive was the 140 Rusty Blackbirds observed between the Friends Blind and Pleasant Plains Rd. 7 Winter Wrens were represented in the same two locations. An Eastern Meadowlark was heard calling in a field near the 90 degree bend on Pleasant Plains Rd. 2 Palm Warblers were seen north of the Fenske Center (all of the above reported by Jeff Ellerbusch). 18 Fox Sparrows and 2 Purple Finches were had earlier in the morning (Simon Lane).

Apparently loud, hovering helicopters do not affect Red-headed Woodpeckers. Today at Troy Meadows, 14 Red-headed Woodpeckers (RHWO) were observed in the snag forest from Alan Drive almost to the skeet area on Troy Meadows Road. Roger Johnson also reported 14 RHWO yesterday. Honestly, there could be 20+ RHWO in these woods. The construction on the Susquehanna-Roseland power line project is a 7 day per week affair. The noise of the hovering helicopters is relentless as they continuously shuttle supplies to the workers in the marsh. Nonetheless, the RHWO and other woodpecker species, Rusty Blackbirds, a roosting Peregrine Falcon, a late Eastern Phoebe and hundreds of sparrows were also in the snag forest (J. Klizas).

Morris Lakes:
Lake Parsippany had 7 Ring-necked Ducks, 2 Lesser Scaup, 2 Hooded Mergansers, 14 Ruddy Ducks and 2 Pied-billed Grebes (Jamie Glydon)

Mountain Lake in Mountain Lakes had 3 American Wigeon, 13 Ring-necked Ducks, 2 Bufflehead, 20 Hooded Mergansers and 2 Ruddy Ducks (Julie Buechner).

Tundra Swans were seen at a fogged-in Nolan’s Point, Lake Hopatcong (Chris Thomas). 6 were seen yesterday.

The Boonton Christmas Bird Count, Dec. 22, 2013: an invitation to participate

Floyd Wolfarth (1911-1987), an historical figure in New Jersey birding, one of the founding members of the Urner Ornithological Club and the symbolic patriarch of the Raccoon Ridge Hawk Watch, receives credit for being the founder of the Boonton Christmas Bird Count (CBC for short). The inaugural Boonton CBC occurred on December 27, 1936. One party of five individuals observed 47 species and tallied 6,589 birds in eight hours. American Crow was the most numerous species, by far, with 5,000 individuals counted. Rusty Blackbird was second with 350. The Boonton Count has continued uninterrupted annually since that date, tallying more than 1.2 million birds. December 22, 2013 marks the 78th consecutive year of this count. You are invited to participate.

mocosocobirds.com is the Internet home for the Boonton CBC.
A brief history of the Boonton CBC is at this web address:
mocosocobirds.com/birds-of-morris-county-n-j/boontoncbc/

A list of the species and their occurrences on the count is found at the link below:
mocosocobirds.com/birds-of-morris-county-n-j/boontoncbc/species-list/

Maps of the territories of the count are on the following web page. Some of the routes are altered as of 2013 to maximize birding potential and are not reflected on the maps as of yet:

As the compiler of the Boonton CBC, I extend an invitation to everyone to take part in the Boonton CBC in any way that you can. Whether it is a feeder watch within the count area, an hour or two spent working a route, a morning or a full day, any contribution to this valuable endeavor is of great importance and warmly appreciated.

Red-necked Grebe, Tundra Swans at Lake Hopatcong, Nov. 16, 2013

Red-necked Grebe, Lake Hopatcong, Nov. 16, 2013 (iPhone ID photo by J. Klizas).

Red-necked Grebe, Lake Hopatcong, Nov. 16, 2013 (iPhone ID photo by J. Klizas).

Three Grebe species were seen at Lake Hopatcong this morning:

  • Red-necked Grebe – Great Cove, viewable for the Jefferson House parking lot on Nolan’s Point Road.
  • Horned Grebe – west of Nolan’s Point.
  • Pied-billed Grebe – various locations.

6 Tundra Swans, 5 adults and 1 juvenile, were in the waterfowl area south of the Brady Road Bridge. This is the same location as 6 Tundra Swans spent this past winter. A lone Greater Yellowlegs was feeding on a section of exposed lake bottom. One of the local adult Bald Eagles landed on exposed shore and proceeded to catch a rat and fly off with the rat-tail dangling. 2 Common Loons continue north of Bertrand’s Island. Lake Hopatcong is currently in a drawn-down cycle which is done every 5 years so that docks and structures can be examined and repaired.

Tundra Swan, Lake Hopatcong, Nov. 16, 2013 (photo by Jamie Glydon).

Lake Hopatcong is the largest lake in New Jersey but it is ignored by birders. Every inch of lake front is developed with residential properties (each seemingly with its own dock), marinas and other commercial real estate such as restaurants. Spring and summer are hopeless as the lake is choked with boats. Autumn, winter and early spring, i.e. waterfowl season, are another matter. The boats are put away for the most part. Last winter, parts of the lake were the only unfrozen water in Morris County and hosted 1,200 Ring-necked Ducks and numerous other duck species including Canvasback and Redhead. Also seen this past winter were Red-throated and Common Loons, Horned Grebe, resident Bald Eagles and many gulls, mostly Herring. Birding the lake takes creativity. There are enough public and commercial places closed for the season, in other words – few people and empty parking lots, so that the entire lake can be viewed.

The list from Lake Hopatcong today includes the following:
Canada Goose – 170
Mute Swan – 100
Tundra Swan – 6
Gadwall – 11
Am. Black Duck – 4
Mallard – 150
Green-winged Teal – 2
Bufflehead – 100
Hooded Merganser – 9
Ruddy Duck – 63
Common Loon – 2
Pied-billed Grebe – 2
Horned Grebe – 1
Red-necked Grebe – 1
Bald Eagle – 1
Greater Yellowlegs – 1
Great Blue Heron – 2
Ring-billed Gull – 87
Herring Gull – 485

All but the most western shore of Lake Hopatcong sits in Morris County. Sussex County lies to the west. The source of the Musconetcong River is Lake Hopatcong and it starts its journey at the western edge of the parking lot at Hopatcong State Park. The Musconetcong is the natural border for Morris and Sussex Counties and further downstream, Morris and Warren counties. The entire beach of Hopatcong State Park, all of Bertrand’s Island and the eastern shore all the way up to northern tip of the lake north of Liffy Island is contained in Morris County.
====================================
Mt. Hope Lake still has 500 Ruddy Ducks. Amazingly, only 3 Mute Swans were on the MUSW capital of Morris County. This is the lowest number recorded in memory. I don’t know how; I don’t know why. Otherwise the lake had only 20 Gadwall, 15 Mallards, 5 Hooded Mergansers 15 American Coot and a juvenile Bald Eagle.
====================================
Lake Parsippany is starting to attract waterfowl after being birdless up to this time. 6 Gadwall, 2 Hooded and 3 Common Mergansers, 23 Ruddy Ducks and 23 Ring-billed Gulls is a start (Jamie Glydon).
====================================
Birchwood Lake near the Tourne has 38 Ring-necked Ducks, 14 Hooded Mergansers and 2 Ruddy Ducks (Julie Buechner).

Notes:
The 24th year of Chimney Rock Hawk Watch has now come to a close.
A spectacular Golden Eagle 25 feet in front of the platform at eye level was the final raptor. What a great finish to a great season. The 22 Golden Eagles this year demolished the record of 18 that stood for 14 years, since 1999. Additionally single day and single hour records were established for Red-shouldered hawks with 143 and 45 respectively. It was a tremendous songbird season with 149 avian species recorded. Greater than 10 species of warblers were recorded on 13 days and 18 species recorded on September 14th. Red-headed woodpeckers were observed on 11 days and Philadelphia Vireos 4 days. Raptor numbers when measured against the prior 23 year median count, showed Golden Eagle, Bald Eagle, Red-shouldered, Broad-winged, Red-tailed hawks and Merlin up…. while Osprey, Northern Harrier, Sharp-shinned, Cooper’s Kestrels and Peregrines were down. Peregrines were recorded in record numbers at some southern watches however (not sure how they got around us, but they did). All in all it was a interesting, fun and productive year at Chimney Rock. All the volunteers were amazing and Chris Aquila once again coordinated and directed the activities with vigor, awesome birding skill and tremendous knowledge graciously shared with both volunteers and the public at large. I’m already looking forward to next year!
