Chats and a Black-crowned Night-Heron, June 3, 2013

Two Yellow-breasted Chats continue on Pleasant Plains Road this evening (Simon Lane). One continues at the second speed bump; the other, between the south gate and the bridge past the headquarters driveway. The Morris Township Chat continues, as well. A Blue Grosbeak found this morning at Florham Park continues a modest local trend in Morris and Somerset counties for that species. It has become a remarkable season for both Yellow-breasted Chats and Blue Grosbeaks in the mocosocoBirds region.

Jim Mulvey found a Black-crowned Night-Heron at Best Lake in Watchung. Best Lake and neighboring Watchung Lake are as reliable as anywhere in Somerset County for this species. There are none reported in the eBird database for Morris County in 2013.

From Jennifer Books regarding Brood II: In case anyone is interested, there is a way to report cicada sightings this year. It is at magicicada.org. There is also a lot of interesting info on the brood there as well.

Blue Grosbeak in Florham Park, June 3, 2013

Jamie Glydon found a singing Blue Grosbeak early this morning at Florham Park Fields. It was in the vicinity of the back pond. This is the second sighting (total of 3 Blue Grosbeaks) of this species in Morris County within two weeks. This is highly unusual for Morris.

The Other Chat of Morris Co., June 2, 2013

Chat

From Tom Smith: I managed to get a photo of the Yellow-breasted Chat on Washington Valley Road this morning (photo above). My brother and I both agreed that there were times that it sounded like there were two of them singing/calling – I don’t know if that was the case, or whether it was an illusion. There was a Brown Thrasher in the vicinity that was mimicking chat sounds, so that should be taken into account.

Editor’s note: Tom is precise with his description. When the Yellow-breasted Chat (YBCH) was first heard on May 30, I thought a Brown Thrasher was doing a spot on imitation of a YBCH – and it was! Then I heard what was unmistakably a YBCH…or so I thought.

Currently there are two Yellow-breasted Chats in Morris County: one at Great Swamp NWR (see post) and the subject of the current post at the Patriots Path section of Washington Valley Rd. in Morris Twp. in the west section of the field west of Ranney Hill Rd.

Yellow-breasted Chat, Acadian Flycatcher in Great Swamp, June 2, 2013

Yellow Breasted Chat (20)

The Yellow-breasted Chat was on Pleasant Plains Road yesterday, June 1, as shown by Dave Emma’s photograph above. From Dave: “He wasn’t very cooperative, and wouldn’t come down from the tree. He was right along side the second speed bump as previously reported. Willow Flycatchers, Yellow Warblers, and one Great Crested Flycatcher were all in the field as well.”

This morning, a Yellow-breasted Chat was found near the south gate entrance of Pleasant Plains Road along with a White-eyed Vireo (Simon Lane). We will assume this is the same Chat seen further up the road in previous days. Inexplicably, the gate was still closed at 7:00 a.m. It was on an automatic open at 6:00 since early spring.

An Acadian Flycatcher was found on the Morris County side of White Bridge along it’s namesake White Bridge Road this morning (S. Lane).

Dave Emma also has a photograph of a Cerulean Warbler (see photo below) on Waterloo Valley Road, Mt. Olive Township from May 21. It was at the same location as reported on May 12. It was missed on a misty May 19. Dave reports hearing two Cerulean Warblers on the road on May 27, so nesting may be occurring.

Breeding Birds, Cicadas, June 1, 2013

It is breeding bird survey season. Many are already in progress. This morning, I conducted the Breeding Bird Survey (a.k.a. the Forest Bird Monitoring Program) for the National Park Service at Jockey Hollow National Historical Park. The Vermont Center for Ecostudies manages this program.

The survey took longer than anticipated for the following reasons:
1. Fallen trees courtesy of superstorm Sandy turned some sections of the route into an obstacle course.
2. I was having too much fun observing the Cicadas.

There was some concern that Brood II might not reach awesome proportions in the Morris/Harding Township areas that other nearby locations gloated about.

That was until today. Jockey Hollow was simply overwhelmed by Cicadas. Exuviae were everywhere: Beech Trees, Japanese Barberry, Christmas Fern. Living Cicadas were seen on tree trunks, flying slowly from one perch to another, landing on me occasionally. The sound of the Cicadas created a roar along Tempe Wick Road. Meanwhile, a woodland habitat survey had to be conducted. 3-4 Hooded Warblers, Worm-eating Warbler and the typical Scarlet Tanagers, Eastern Wood-Pewees Ovenbirds, Veerys, Wood Thrushes and Pileated Woodpeckers, etc. were tallied.

Elsewhere

The White-eyed Vireo continues at the Whitehead Rd. section of Patriot’s Path in the Washington Valley section of Morris Township.

The Yellow-breasted Chat is still chatting away at the Washington Valley Road section of Patriots Path. It is on the west side of the field. The Chat is easily heard but nearly impossible to see. The field surrounding the trees the Chat favors is protected by poison ivy on one side and waste deep vegetation on the other.

The Yellow-breasted Chat on Pleasant Plains Road, Great Swamp NWR was not detected today.

A Yellow-breasted Chat continues today on Pleasant Plains Road, Great Swamp NWR. As stated in the comment section of yesterday’s post, this is the third Yellow-breasted Chat in Morris County in the past two weeks.

The Blue Grosbeaks of the Tourne have not been reported since Tuesday.

Up to three Dickcissels are being seen at Negri-Nepote Native Grassland Preserve. Two were observed copulating this morning in the field near the intersection of the yellow and purple trails. A fearless Grasshopper Sparrow spent at least 20 minutes holding on to what looks like a cricket as it flew from one perch to the next (see photo above). It came within 15 feet of the people on the path.

From Leslie Webster, May 30:
News from Loantaka Brook Reservation: I was delighted to hear two, possibly three (did one relocate?) Louisiana Waterthrushes singing between Loantaka Way and Kitchell Pond. It seems they are staying. A Yellow-billed Cuckoo “sang”, as well. There were two Great Egrets at Kitchell Pond and one at a farm pond east of Loantaka Way. The Ruby-throated Hummingbird continues to use a small dead tree as a perch, on the west side of Kitchell Pond, joined sometimes by a Willow Flycatcher.

Yellow-breasted Chat, White-eyed Vireo in Morris Township, May 30, 2013

This morning, a Yellow-breasted Chat was on the west side of the meadow in the Washington Valley Rd. section of Patriot’s Path in Morris Township. This is the second Yellow-breasted Chat reported in Morris County in the past few weeks. A White-eyed Vireo was observed at the Whitehead Rd. section of Patriot’s Path, a location in which this species spent the spring and early summer of 2011. Other typical species in the area are Blue-winged and Yellow Warblers, American Redstart, Common Yellowthroat, Veery, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Cedar Waxwings, Willow Flycatcher, Field Sparrow, etc.

Photos of the two Blue Grosbeaks of the Tourne, May 27, 2013

While Blue Grosbeak is an annual species in Somerset County, the records for Morris County are sparse, leaning towards the rare end of the frequency spectrum. There are two autumn records from 2011 and some scattered reports from other years but not many that are documented. It is a noteworthy sighting that two are sticking around at the Sparrow Fields of the Tourne. Tom Smith photographed the Blue boy today, May 27. The Buff bird was photographed Saturday, May 25. Both photos are in limited light but they work for documentation.

Blue Grosbeak update, King Rail, Grassland Survey, May 27, 2013

There are apparently two Blue Grosbeaks at the Tourne Sparrow Fields. A young male with some blue on its head was seen and heard today on separate occasions by Chris Takacs and Jamie Glydon. This is a different bird than the all buff individual photographed on Saturday.

Jimmy Lee reports on the JerseyBirds listserv that the King Rail called again this afternoon from the overlook on Pleasant Plains Road, Great Swamp NWR.

A Grassland Bird Survey covering the Burnt Mills Road area of Branchburg Township was conducted this morning. Highlights were Bobolinks and Eastern Meadowlarks at 2 of the 8 points. A Northern Bobwhite called repeatedly from one field on the east side of Burnt Mill Road. All of the territory of the survey is private property.

Blue Grosbeak, Flycatchers, May 26, 2013

The Blue Grosbeak of the Sparrow Fields

The Blue Grosbeak (BLGR) found yesterday by Tim Vogel continued today at the Tourne Sparrow Fields on Old Boonton Road, Denville Township. A map of the Tourne County Park is here. After passing the wooded area on the path to the Rockaway River, the BLGR is in the first field on your left. The BLGR favors a Black Cherry next to the bat house (as does the resident pair of Eastern Bluebirds). Occasionally, it flies to a tree across the field.

For Glenn Mahler, his sighting today of the Blue Grosbeak represents number 272 on his Morris County life list of bird species. Congratulations, Glenn. This is the highest known mark in Morris County history.

Flycatchers

Least and Acadian Flycatchers were observed this morning on the Ogden Mine RR Trail of Mahlon Dickerson Reservation. (Mike Almendinger, Jonathan Klizas, Simon Lane).

Both Willow and Alder Flycatchers were heard at the overlook on Pleasant Plains Road, Great Swamp NWR (S. Lane).

Field Notes

From Leslie Webster:
Newly noted in Loantaka Brook Reservation this morning: a Willow Flycatcher at Kitchell Pond. The warbler population seems to have settled into the usual summer residents: Common Yellowthroat, American Redstart, and lots of Yellow Warblers. I heard a Worm Eating Warbler in the park, during one of our recent rain-soaked days, but it was not in evidence this morning.
