Birding Field Notes, May 5, 2014

3 basic plumaged Bonaparte’s Gulls continue at Budd Lake (Alan Boyd).

2014’s first Wilson’s Warbler in the mocosocoBirds region was at the Wildlife Observation center of the Great Swamp NWR (Jim Mulvey).

Sourlands Mountain Preserve in Hillsborough Twp. had 4 Solitary Sandpipers, Tennessee and Hooded Warbler among other species  (eBirded by Vicki Schwartz).

From Tom Ostrand, Sunday, May 4:
“I went on the Duke Farms Dawn Chorus walk this morning (led by Mike Pollack). There wasn’t a lot of activity, probably due to the cold night and overcast day. The most interesting moment was an Eastern Whip-poor-will calling at about 5:15 (in the core section of Duke Farms). After daylight, the group walked around the estate for another 3 hours. I counted 47 species, with only 7 warblers, 95% of which were Yellow-rumps (at least 50, seemingly everywhere).

After the group walk, I made my first-ever visit to Finderne Wetlands. Very little activity there, the only slightly interesting bird was this Solitary Sandpiper that let me get surprisingly close before it decided to move on.

More interesting than the birds were the 3 guys from the Central Jersey Stream Team, who were hard at work hauling hundreds of tires out of the riverbank. They told me they think most of the tires were dumped at one time around 1980, possibly by Somerville or Bridgewater (the town govts!), in a misguided attempt to prevent erosion. They will possibly have state support to continue the cleanup, which will require heavy equipment to actually carry the tires away. Some of them have steel cores, and are extremely heavy.” – Tom Ostrand

Caspian Tern; Field Notes, May, 4, 2014

A Caspian Tern was a south-bound flyover at the parking lot at Chimney Rock this morning (Jeff Ellerbusch). This is the first known record of this species for Somerset County. 14 species of warblers were also recorded at Chimney Rock today.

From Ken Hart:
“Prothonotary Warbler last seen at East Observation tower, Lord Stirling Park, 9:30AM. Also, just saw 2 Common Ravens here, just south of the tower. Chestnut-sided Warblers were everywhere this morning along the river at Lord Stirling. Must have counted 10 males (no females). Plus Yellow and Yellow-rumped Warblers in the double digits (12 and about 30 respectively). And seven other Warbler sp. as well as three Baltimore Orioles. All before 9 AM.”

Yesterday, Kevin Browne kayaked the Passaic River and took the following photos of the bi-county Prothonotary Warbler – a confirmed nester.

From Leslie Webster:
News from Loantaka Brook Reservation: It was all about Catbirds this morning; they seemed to have arrived en masse. Three Baltimore Orioles were at Kitchell Pond, as well as three Great Egrets. The most productive stretch for warblers was the first 1/4 mile along the gas line, from the Loantaka Way parking area. Present were Ovenbirds, Black-and-White, Common Yellowthroat, American Redstart, Northern Parula, Chestnut-sided, Black-throated Blue, Yellow-rumped, and Black-throated Green. At the pond, Yellow and Pine warblers rounded out the count.

Warblers were plentiful in any appropriate habitat today. Get out and enjoy the next few weeks.

Summer Tanager, Yellow-throated Warbler, Vesper Sparrow, Birds!, May 2, 2014

After experiencing the seemingly never-ending winter that recently passed, today reaffirmed how great nature can be and how lucky we are who study, appreciate and revere it. The editor apologizes for not listing more but it is the month of May with bushels of bird reports and the hour is late.

 Summer Tanager at Chimney Rock

Summer Tanager

(Summer Tanager, Chimney Rock, Martinsville, NJ, photo by Jeff Ellerbusch)

Summer Tanager is a rare visitor indeed to Somerset, Morris and most counties in New Jersey. This immature male was observed by Jeff Ellerbusch, Grant Price and Bob Roland in the Chimney Rock parking lot. 8 species of warblers were also in attendance as May starts to heat up.

What has become an unprecedented spring for Yellow-throated Warblers in the mocosocoBirds region adds another record today. Jim Mulvey found and photographed a Yellow-throated Warbler (Setophaga dominca albilora) by the Kitchell Pond bridge on the main path at Loantaka Brook Reservation. The warbler was still present at the same location at 5 p.m.

Numerous other warblers and vireos were reported by many observers today from Loantaka.

Jim Gilbert found the Vesper Sparrow pictured above along the drive leading from Lees Hill Road to the Fenske Vistor Center. It was still there at 6:00 p.m.

Pleasant Plains Road is flooded and impassable beyond the Fenske Center but the water has also created favorable shorebird habitat. The following shorebirds were seen near the water’s edge: 1 Spotted and 2 Solitary Sandpipers, 2 Greater Yellowlegs and 2 Least Sandpipers (J. Klizas, Simon Lane, Joe Pescatore). Modest, of course, but this is Morris County where every shorebird is savored; one cannot be sure when one will be seen again.

Hooded Warbler, Jonathan’s Woods, NJ, May 2, 2014 (early morning photo by Jonathan Klizas)

Jonathan’s Woods is more than the late Cathedral Pines, mostly destroyed by superstorm Sandy in 2012. There is an extensive wetlands system, deciduous woodland and mixed habitat which is a magnet for migrant songbirds in spring.

At dawn today were Great Crested Flycatcher, Warbling Vireo, Veery, Hermit Thrush, Ovenbirds, Northern Waterthrush, Blue-winged Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, Hooded Warbler, Yellow, Palm, Pine, Yellow-rumped and Black-throated Green Warblers and Baltimore Oriole. White-throated Sparrows were numerous.

 Rockaway Township

Various stops in this excellent birding area, with Green Pond Road as its main artery, produced the following:

Snakehill Road: a flyover Osprey, Blue-headed Vireo, 3 Wood Thrush, 1 Brown Thrasher, 4 Ovenbirds, 2 Louisiana Watherthrushes and 1 Black-throated Green Warbler.

Lake Denmark Road: flyover Common Loon, Broad-winged Hawk, Killdeer, Spotted Sandpiper, Yellow-throated Vireo, Gray Catbird,  Ovenbirds galore , 2 Louisiana Waterthrushes, Blue-winged Warbler, Black-and-white Warbler, American Redstart, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Prairie Warbler, Black-throated Green Warbler and Baltimore Oriole.

A Common Raven harrased a Red-tailed Hawk over Green Pond Road at Craigmeur.

Deerhaven Lake. adds a visual Worm-eating Warbler and Blue-headed Vireo.

Oak Meadows/Sasso Tract and the Righter Mine Trail had Veerys, Red-eyed Vireo, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Great Crested Flycatcher, Louisiana Waterthrush, Ovenbirds, Black-throated Green Warbler, etc.

 Bonaparte’s Gulls at Budd Lake

The Common Terns of yesterday are gone but 4 basic plumaged Bonaparte’s Gulls remain along with hundreds of swallows and 2 Common Loons at Budd Lake.

 Other Field Notes

From Ken Hart:
White-eyed Vireo at 6pm at Robert Stahl Natural Area, Bedminster. Also 3 Green Herons, and a Savannah Sparrow.
Earlier on Black River Rd, Long Valley:
Gray Catbird, Black-and-white Warbler and Blue-headed Vireo.
Hardscrabble Rd, Bernardsville: Black-throated Blue Warbler.
Continuing Eastern Meadowlarks singing in the fields at Black River & Lamington Roads.

From Bobby Skrabal, Hillsborough Twp.:
During the past two days we’ve had a number of visitors to our yard. The annual Rose-breasted Grosbeak pair and a Ruby-throated hummingbird showed up yesterday at the feeders. We also had a Veery foraging in the woods yesterday, and today the Wood Thrush was singing bright and early. The list of warblers over the past two days: Yellow-rumped, American Redstart, Northern Parula, Black-throated Green, Black-throated Blue, Blackburnian, Black-and-white, and an Ovenbird. Other notable birds included an Eastern Kingbird and two Indigo Bunting today, as well as a Yellow-throated Vireo, which was singing from the top of the trees, yesterday. Still waiting for the Baltimore Orioles to arrive…

From Walter Blenderman:
1 Black-crowned Night-Heron on the Somerset side of the Green Brook Park opposite the Horse Shoe Pond – first time I’ve seen one there. It was kind of dirty looking on the belly area; mud, I guess. There was also 1 Green Heron in a tree by the same pond (Union side).

2 Black-crowned Night-Herons at West End Pond, on tree limbs in the back.

Egret, Terns, Grebes, Gulls, Bobolinks, Migrants – May 1, 2015

Wednesday’s drenching storm left a widespread collection of interesting bird species in its wake.

A Snowy Egret was found this morning by Dave Blinder at a baseball field at Gardner Field in Denville. It was present this afternoon in left-center field until approximately 3:45 when it left. Snowy Egret is very rare in both Morris and Somerset Counties. The last record in Morris is from May, 2011 in Florham Park.

From Donna Schulman:

Negri-Nepote Native Grassland Preserve was totally delightful on this misty moisty May Day morning, with Tree and Barn Swallow flying over the fields, Eastern Bluebirds perched posts, and Chipping Sparrows and American Goldfinches singing from the tree tops. Grasshopper Sparrows could be heard sporadically from the field to the NW of Hannah Pond.

A NASHVILLE WARBLER was making its way down the tree line along the main path. A lovely male BOBOLINK was perched by the pond, which got busier as the morning cleared up. By mid-morning, a Spotted, a Solitary, and 3 Least Sandpipers joined the continuing Greater Yellow-legs. Two Great Blue Herons and two Killdeer flew overhead. Three American Kestrels were on the wire while a Northern Harrier cruised over the northwest fields. The Cooper’s Hawk was also very busy.

One curious thing–I continuously heard a Ring-necked Pheasant from the private land to the southwest of the grasslands. Then, as I was leaving, I spied a male Ring-necked Pheasant along the bit of woods on the northeast edge. As I was watching it, I again heard the first pheasant from the other direction.

From John J. Collins:

I went to Chimney Rock this afternoon following lunch and had a few “first of the year” birds including: 2 Eastern Kingbirds, Veery, Ovenbird, American Redstart, and Baltimore Oriole. And this morning, in my garden here in Raritan, I heard and then saw my first of the year Great Crested Flycatcher.

From Leslie Webster:

The storm must have carried song birds along last night. A Rose-breasted Grosbeak showed up at my Madison feeder, as well as a House Wren. I’m looking forward to seeing today’s song bird reports!

Jim Mulvey found the above American Bittern in the Great Swamp NWR today. 2 were seen last night from the Overlook on Pleasant Plains Road (Simon Lane).

The Yellow-crowned Night-Heron found this morning by Rob Gallucci and seen by others in the morning was not relocated in the afternoon. It was originally found south of the East Observation Tower at Lord Stirling Park.

7 Great Egrets were in the Passaic River along the Fisherman’s Trail at Lord Stirling Park (Rob Gallucci). In fact, Great Egrets are currently quite noticeable in the north Somerset/south Morris area.

A Snowy Egret was seen on private property in Somerset County.

2 Red-breasted Mergansers are still on the Raritan River viewed from the Delaware and Raritan Canal Towpath. Swallow numbers on this stormy day were: Northern Rough-winged – 200; Tree – 900; Bank – 7; Barn – 90; Cliff – 2 (Jeff Ellerbusch).

A Marsh Wren was at Troy Meadows this morning (Mike Ostrow).

A male Bobolink was seen and heard at Duke Farms (Dan Morley).

Ovenbird, Common Yellowthroat and Black-and-white Warblers are in the Great Swamp NWR (J. Klizas).

Yellow Warblers are everywhere.

The Yellow-throated Warbler continues for a 16th day at Colonial Park, Parking Lot A (David Bernstein).

Rob Gallucci found and photographed an adult Yellow-crowned Night-Heron (YCNH) this morning at Lord Stirling Park. It was near the East Observation Tower and neighboring field. It stayed after Rob left and was subsequently seen by others.

This is the second year in a row a YCNH has been found in Somerset County after years of no sightings. Morris County has also had its share of YCNH sightings in 2011-13.

A Sora was heard from the overlook on Pleasant Plains Road, Great Swamp NWR approximately 8 p.m. this evening. Two American Bitterns were seen flying (Simon Lane).

The season’s first Prairie Warbler and second Wood Thrush in Morris County were at Muriel Hepner Park, Denville today (Julie Buechner).

2 Northern Harriers, a Red-headed Woodpecker, Yellow-throated Vireo and a Rusty Blackbird were at the Great Swamp NWR (Randy Little).

A Prothonotary Warbler, Ovenbird, American Redstart and Rusty Blackbirds were along the Fisherman’s Trail at Lord Stirling Park this morning (David Bernstein).

Melanie Lane Wetlands, Hanover Twp. had 6 Greater and 3 Lesser Yellowlegs, 5 Great Egrets and 2 Great Blue Herons. A Common Raven flew over the pond getting dive-bombed by an American Crow. Warbling Vireos are in. A Rusty Blackbird or two were in the wet woods (J. Klizas).

The Yellow-throated Warbler continues at Parking Lot A in Colonial Park, Franklin Twp. (eBirded by L. Bizzarro). Also at the Nature Trail: Eastern Kingbird, Red-headed Woodpecker, Hermit Thrushes, etc.

From Ken Hart:
Blue-headed Vireo above my house this morning, Black River Rd., Long Valley.

From Leslie Webster:
“News from Loantaka Brook Reservation: this morning was good for warblers, particularly Yellow-rumped. Groups of them were scattered throughout the woods and at Kitchell Pond. Associated with them and Ruby-crowned Kinglets, were a Northern Parula, a Pine Warbler and a Black-and-white Warbler. There were relatively large numbers of Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, usually in pairs, throughout the woods and at the pond. Yellow Warblers are reinforcing their beachhead at the pond, and Baltimore Orioles are also present now. Chimney Swifts, Tree Swallows, and Barn Swallows soar overhead. A Canada Goose pair are nesting on the back pond.”

[Editor: Add a Great Egret, 2 Green Herons and a Pileated Woodpecker at sunrise at Loantaka.]

Because there isn’t much else to look at.

Every birder who follows weather patterns and watches bird migration radar knows that the northeast is in the midst of a migration stall and crawl. Species are trickling through but in general the timing of arrivals is late and, other than Yellow-rumped Warblers, Palm Warblers and the typical species of the region, the number of migrating individuals is Silent Spring-like. All of migration is to our west and south, so far. It doesn’t look to change until next weekend at the earliest.

Raptors at Lord Stirling Park

Meanwhile, even though northwest winds dominated this morning, a steady stream of raptors flew north over an improvised hawk watch near the kiosk on the main path of Lord Stirling Park. 109 Broad-winged Hawks, 5 Bald Eagles, 2 Osprey, 26 Sharp-shinned Hawks, 1 Cooper’s Hawk and 2 American Kestrels cruised over unexpectedly in the morning considering the wind direction. 106 Double-crested Cormorants in various groups also migrated (Jeff Ellerbusch, Simon Lane).

Prothonotary Warbler is working the area north and south of the beaver lodge along the Fisherman’s Trail at Lord Stirling Park. Yesterday’s Yellow-throated Warbler was not relocated today.

Chimney Swifts

A strong, concentrated push of Chimney Swifts up the Raritan River in Franklin Township was witnessed yesterday by Jeff Ellerbusch. Today, Chimney Swifts were difficult to miss in Morris and northern Somerset County. Morristown, Melanie Lane Wetlands, Loantaka Brook Reservation, Lord Stirling Park – basically, Chimney Swifts are everywhere as of today.

Arrivals

The following list is from correspondence and eBird reports. This is a sampling of 2014 warbler arrival dates in the combined counties of Morris and Somerset since Friday, April 25.

  • Blue-winged Warbler (Apr. 27) – Rober J. Stahl Natural Area, Bedminster (Mike Almendinger)
  • Nashville Warbler (Apr. 26) – Delaware and Raritan Canal Towpath, (Jeff Ellerbusch)
  • Black-throated Blue Warbler (Apr. 27) – Scherman Hoffman Sanctuary, Bernardsville (Cathy Millington, photo)
  • Black-throated Green Warbler (Apr. 25) – Hillsborough Twp. (Bobby Skrabal)
  • Prairie Warbler (Apr. 27) – Glenhurst Meadows (Bobby Skrabal)

Other Field Notes

The Yellow-throated Warbler continues near Parking Lot A at Colonial Park, Franklin Twp. (m.obs).

2 Black-crowned Night-Herons continue at Jefferson Road Pond, Parsippany (Julie Buechner).

2 Black-crowned Night-Herons continue at Green Brook Park as of yesterday (Walter Blenderman).
